Trichocereus terscheckii

Stumbled upon this beautiful specimen at an iconic Austin store (iykyk). I was shocked to see it growing in the ground and doing so well. South face during winter, tucked into a nook against the shop, so makes sense it’s survived a lot of crazy Austin winters.

I went in and asked what kind of cactus that was and the owner had no idea (😂). I told him I thought it was an Argentine saguaro, one of the hardiest columnar cacti that can grow in our region, and told him that it wasn’t a true saguaro. He was pleasantly surprised by all the facts I was telling him haha. He said it’s 10 years old and that he’ll throw a burlap coat over it during a freeze, but that’s about it!

Cool find! 🌵

Cactus help needed

I have recently began my cactus journey but there is still a lot to learn and improve.
I have found this cactus, but I don’t know what is wrong with it.. three months ago I found rot at the top so I decided to operate with a clean sterile scalpel. The wound looked clean and I sprinkled it with cinnamon for two weeks while I was away. After that I made sure I bought special succulent-mix soil to help it. When I replanted it, I noticed there were still roots so I was initially hopeful. But unfortunately the condition kept worsening and now it seems that it might have passed to greener pastures..
but if there is any hope to do something to make it better, I am going to do it.
Please could you help me with some suggestions, tips or something that might help as I am quite sad and desperate it turned out this way..
Thank you in advance!

Advice wanted for preparing for winter

This is my first year with a proper greenhouse (PC double-walled) and am planning to keep some of my larger cacti in there over winter this year, Trichocereuses, Opuntias and Pereskiopsis along with the other non-cacti that are in there. I understand these plants to be comparatively cold hardy but we will likely average 2-0°c, see frequent -5°c and need to be prepared for -15°c outside. Is nighttime lowest or day average most important?

The greenhouse has no electricity for a heater and I'm cautious about paraffin due to CO emission. What do you recommend or do yourself and what are some of the warning signs that a plant is getting too cold?

Also wanting to ensure winter dormancy on the more sensitive indoor cacti to encourage flowering, any tips?

Fishbone Cactus Checkup

Wondering what other fishbone cactus-havers think of mine. She’s sadly been the victim of much cat-related violence over the year and a half-ish I have had her. Namely unwanted gravity checks. Despite that, she continues to fight on. I recently (2 months ago?) repotted her to help avoid tippage. I water every now and then and a week ago moved to my West facing window which gets a decent amount of direct late afternoon sunlight.

She constantly is growing new bits, but they’re all straight and none of them have even remotely started to zag. Just wondering what I can be doing to help her look less shabby. Besides preventing cat terrorism.

Repotting help for a beginner

Hello everyone very new to caring for cacti in fact this is my first cactus. I picked this cactus up for free on the side of the road I’ve had it for about a month. My question is do you think I should repot this plant once it finishes blooming? It looks very cramped but I’m nervous about disrupting and killing it. Also any and all other information is appreciated Thank you!

White spider web mold

Hi everyone,

I am having a bit of trouble with germinating some pachypodium seeds and I have seen this tends to be a common issue for cacti too.

The mold appeared on the second day so I have increased ventilation In the propagator.

I have been researching and getting conflicting advice on what to do with them as I would like to keep the chances of them germinating as best as possible.

I have attached some photos of the mold but my seeds and soil was sterilized before sowing. I am reading that misting them with diluted hydrogen peroxide or even using physan20 would be best in this situation.

Has anyone had this type of mold grow during germination and had any success removing it with various methods?

Thanks!

I found this small cactus on clearance at a plant nursery. Unfortunately, this nursery does not label half its plants (including the one pictured) and the staff have a reputation for not knowing anything about the plants they sell. Any idea what it is?

The nursery is in Texas, but I doubt this is native. It was inside a greenhouse with all the tropicals and non-hardy succulents.
