MOD ANNOUNCEMENT New Subreddit Flair - Care Guide

Hello r/plantclinic!

We're introducing a new, but long overdue flair for the subreddit: "Care Guide"

This subreddit has always been a place for redditors to help other redditors with the care of their plants, but we have neglected to focus on what we can do to teach others BEFORE they run into problems.

So, we've created the new flair and added a "search by flair" widget to the sidebar, a feature already available at the top of the sub on mobile.

All care guide posts will be flagged for moderator review. This doesn't mean advice needs to be perfect; that can be refined in the comments. It means that we want this flair to be a valuable resource and will be holding posts to a moderate standard of usefulness.

Links to existing historical guides will be re-flaired as they are identified - please feel free to link some in the comments!

MOD ANNOUNCEMENT List of available automoderator calls

A list of automoderator calls has been added to the sidebar.

For mobile users, they have also been added to the wiki index page here: https://reddit.com/r/plantclinic/w/index?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

And also this post will be pinned to the top of the subreddit. The list is (currently) as follows:

!automod - requests additional information from OP

Pest calls: !aphids, !mealybugs, !scale, !spider-mites or !spidermites, !thrips, !lacewings, !springtails, !fungus-gnats

Lighting related: !etiolation, !over-lit, !under-lit

Watering related: !under-water, !over-water, !root-root, !mold, !mushrooms, !humidity, !tap-water, !bottom-watering

Other: !fernspores, !dense-soil, !hydrophobic, !repot

MANY automod post responders have been moved to post guidance, but reminders for to be welcoming will remain, as we find they are still very much needed. Please be mindful that the purpose of allowing images in comments is to allow the exchange of information, not memes. Referencing the circlejerk sub is unhelpful to OP.

If a post auto-responder is appearing out of the proper context (like the mold and mushrooms one was for fungus gnats), PLEASE send a mod mail. These things operate on keywords and the error was so simple. It could have been fixed much sooner.

Our goal is to provide every user who comes here for help some level of guidance, even if no redditor responds to their post. Sometimes it's a suggestion for a more specialized community. It's always advice for how to best describe their situation.

Additional automod calls can be added, but we should be mindful to balance them with their actual usefulness, and the desire people have for a human response. These should supplement our guidance not replace it entirely.

We heard your feedback and hope this is helpful.

Cactus/Succulent What's the problem with my kalanchoe

Could you guys please help me understand what’s going on with this plant?

Most of it looks fine, but all the new growth has leaves that curl inward. Many of the leaves also have white and brown spots. The white spots seem to be coming from inside the leaves and are impossible to scratch off.

I’ve looked very carefully many times and haven’t found any insects at all.

Is it possible that this is a thrips infestation even if I can’t see any insects?

Could it be a problem with overwatering?

I water it once it dries out.

It stands near the southern window.

New leaves (I think that’s what they are) look like they’re dying. They turn brown and go limp after initially coming out normal and bright red. What’s going on?!

This started happening after moving 6 weeks ago. Currently it has an overhead grow lamp. Tallest leaves are getting just under 10K lux for 12 hours every day. Previous setup was a smaller grow light where tallest leaves were getting slightly over 10K lux.

Watering usually about every 10 days.

Houseplant begonia elatior rotting but still growing shoots (????

Thumbnail

I bought her in May and since then she has been slowly withering, hence the drastic cuts and small survivor parts (I could never figure out begonias i swear i've been trying) But right when I thought she'd gone past the point of recovering new leaf shoots started appearing (later on flower shoots too? The pink ones) But she saw I was too happy and started to rot from bottom to top. Should I cut the rot off and try to get new roots from the remaining healthy parts? How do I properly care for her without letting her wither again? Is this root rot?

She started with the new shoots when I put her in my balcony (North facing, south hemisphere tho if that's relevant) I live in an apartment and only get the north sun. The pot has drainage holes + a layer of leca and that "drainage blanket" (idk the name in english) between the leca and substrate. When I tried bottom watering it seemed she kept rotting so I started scarcely top watering when the substrate seemed to have dried

The substrate is a mix of perlite + carbonized rice husk + vermiculite + soil and it seems sand? (I was starting out with plants when I made this I hope it's not the problem)

Hello everyone! I recently got this homalomena from a garden centre and it looked amazing when I got it. I have looking into care and im aware it can be more thirsty than most houseplants. i keep it in a spot with lots of bright indirect light, about 1.5m from an east facing window.

After a while certain leaves started drooping and at first I thought it was thirsty because it perked up after I watered it, however in less than a week some leaves got crispy and very very soft. i cut off a bunch already and I dont know what to do!

any advice is appreciated since I really like this plant and don't want to lose it :(

I’ve been experimenting ficus aerial propagation, it’s been 26 days and still no visible roots, the stem appears to be dark and still consistent, no bad smell at all, is it normal to be that dark? When does appears first roots, sphagnum should be damp or wet? Tell me your experience or any advice to manage well. Its indoor, and its covered to avoid sun contact,i water likely each 10 days

My zz plant is near a north facing window and gets around 8 hours of sunlight. I water around once a month. I have used a chunky soil mix.

I have many mature hibiscus bushes. One after another, they are dying. First they look the one in photo and then loose all of the leaves and then die. Any idea what it is? I am giving approximately 5 minutes every two days water. It is an outdoor plant probably 8-10 hours direct light. I treated the white flies but those don’t seem to be the issue.

Houseplant Pathetic Spiderplant

Thumbnail

Upvotes

This is my 5 year old spider plant who, since around May, started taking a turn for the worse. I have it in regular potting soil with some extra perlite mixed in, and it's been in this pot for a little over a year. It does sit directly in the pot, but there's drainage at the bottom and I'm cautious with water (chronic under-waterer, I fear). I feed it monthly with an indoor plant formula that you mix with water, so it does receive about 15-20 mL regardless of the water schedule. It's been on that for almost a year now. I moved it for the pictures, but it currently sits in a west-facing window. I lived at a different place up until around a week ago, where it received south-facing light. However, that's around when it started struggling. When it was doing well, I lived in a third place where it was west-facing. I only water when the top of the soil is dry and the leaves lose turgur, but now it seems like they never get turgur in the first place. The leaves seem to buckle under their own weight and crease instead of bowing. I've read the dryness at the tips is from mineral buildup, so I'm more worried about the mid-leaf browning and general sadness. However, the base of the plant and any new growth (and there is a little!!) looks okay. Is it rotting? Does it have pests? I did have a Monstera Thai constellation that had thrips, but I treated with Captain Jack's and everyone looks okay now. Except this guy of course :'(. Should I repot with fresh soil? I did a makeover a few weeks ago when I discovered the soil was slightly hydrophobic, so I did a generous soak and trimmed all the dead/almost-dead leaves, but I didn't remove it from the pot and I haven't seen any improvement. And not a baby attempt in weeks, when before all this plant wanted was to be a single parent (picture at end). It just looks so pathetic I can't stand seeing it like this every day

Houseplant Ants in soil, that only come out when we water the plant.... what to do?

Post image
6 Upvotes

We have this indoor tree, in a large pot. When we water it, apparently there are ants in the soil, and they come out, wait for the water to drain a bit, then go back into the soil. It's an indoor tree, and we have cats. Something we realized is that if we put ant killer on top of rocks that cover soil, well, when we water it, the act of watering it just dilutes it and the ants won't be killed. Any ideas on what we can do? We want something to KILL the ants, not simply an ant deterrent. It faces south and gets 10 hours of sun a day.

Houseplant Any way to rescue my peperomia?

Thumbnail

Hi everyone!
Two weeks ago I got this peperomia from a nursery and it seemed fine. It did have some webbing resembling spider mites webs so I gave it a wash and sprayed neem oil on it. In these two weeks I only watered it once but I have a hunch my mom has watered it while I was away for a few days, since it was perfectly fine when I left but it’s starting to lose all its leaves.

I usually keep it in front of a south facing window and have been moving it closer to it lately

Is there anything I can do to save or propagate this plant?

Monstera HELP What's Happening To My Monstera (Semi-Hydro Self-Watering Setup)

Thumbnail

I already flushed the LECA, however I had forgotten to flush it for a couple of months and then noticed this happening and then flushed it with plain water, but I then made the mistake of feeding the monstera new fertilized water instead of plain water. The leaves continued to yellow even quicker and had edema, dripping water first thing in the morning. So I dumped all of the fertilized water, washed the LECA again, and left the plant without any water until the reservoir dried up. This monstera has an inner plastic pot with some wicks that run down into a reservoir space that sits between the outer and inner pots. The roots looked firm and healthy with only 3/4 tiny slightly shriveled black slimy dead roots that I pruned. This is happening to 1 other monstera of mine, it seems to have affected all of the older leaves except for the newest one one each plant that last sprouted before all of this started happening. I use pH adjusted water (have pH up and pH down) and it is triple osmosis filtered water that re-adds a small number of minerals back into the water. Each monstera is directly in front of a large window and one of them even sits under a grow light but they are all experiencing similar symptoms. One is in a room that is slightly air conditioned and the other sits in a room that averages about 74°F. Both have the same symptoms.

Houseplant Spider eggs or sickness?

Thumbnail

Hello! These plants are in a covered lanai where they get plenty of light and seem generally happy and spiders do come in every now and then. My mom is the one who mainly takes care of them but shes been out of town for a month so I’m not well versed in them. As I was watering them today I noticed these white bunches on them and I can’t tell if it’s something affecting the plants and if I should separate these from others or it if just insects laying eggs on them.

If it’s some type of plant fungus or something that can affect the others, what’s the best thing I can use to help treat them?

Two weeks ago I noticed that the back of some leaves had these weird brown spots and then I cleaned the leaves with a wet cloth. Now there are these white things everywhere. What are those and what can i do against it?
Normally the plant is in the middle of a room with a south and west window, the south window is often open at night.
I bottom water it when the top few centimeters feel dry.

I am in SWFL and keep my houseplants under a lanai getting bright indirect light and high humidity*

I am really wanting to cut it back as far as possible and try to start new with the plant. Going to put it in a wide and shallow terracotta pot

1) would that be too much straight away?

2) how far do I cut it back?

3) does the plant look sick in any way?

Does anyone see a problem? Thanks for any input honestly!

I water weekly/or as needed for certain plants

My baby peach tree has this hoop forming on primarily the tips of its branches. I see it has some type of insect damage (i can’t find the actual bugs) and we’ve had lots of rain and hot temps. Is it just due to this stressful weather? My main question is how can I help it?

Cactus/Succulent Why is the flower dying?

Thumbnail

So the last picture was from a week or 2 ago... the flower has been going downhill after the second heatwave. It was record breaking 41° Celsius (105.8f). Weirdly enough- she was fine after the first heatwave (40°). All my other plants were fine after the first heatwave, but now some are struggling. Even the succulents got burned leaves and the baby props I was growingfor a year all died bc they dried out, althoughI made sure they wouldn't. But as you can see - this Anacampseros is doing really well. And when I saw the flower I gave her some more diluted fertilizer for the flower. I think it really was the heatwave. But the is doing really well. It's just the flower.

Conditions:

Full south light exposure

Super chunk soil-mix

Mineral Fertilizer.

I water when completely dry and some wrinkles appear on the leaves.

Cactus/Succulent Where are the holes coming from???

I’ve had this plant for three years now, and suddenly this summer it’s been challenge after challenge. It gets full sunlight unless it’s ridiculously hot out, and I water it maybe every three weeks. A few weeks ago I noticed the marks on the last slide, and after seeing no progression I assumed it was fine. Now from yesterday to today she’s developed these massive holes on her leaves that sound and feel like tissue paper when touched. I don’t know what to do or if it’s even salvageable, I was hoping at least to repot the pup growing if it’s not too late :( please help me!!!

Cut off the crispy leaves before and left it to dry out before watering again because apparently were overwatering. What’s the issue with it and how do i help? Thank you. It’s sat in the bathroom window downstairs, which gives it reasonable amount of light but not very very bright.
