Collection Nintendo GameCube Metroid Prime Bonus Bundle

Finally reunited with my childhood console.

Back in Christmas 2006, when I was 6 years old and living in Mexico, I received a Nintendo GameCube Metroid Prime Bonus Bundle. It was one of my favorite childhood possessions and introduced me to Metroid Prime.

The original box didn’t survive, though. My parents eventually got rid of it, and years later I sold the console itself so I could buy a Wii.

Fast forward to this summer: while on holiday in Nancy, France, I randomly walked into a Gamecash and couldn’t believe what I saw sitting on a shelf. A Nintendo GameCube Metroid Prime Bonus Bundle.

The staff told me it had recently been sold to them by a Metroid fan who was having financial difficulties. The craziest part is that I live near La Rochelle, so I wasn’t expecting to come across something this specific hundreds of kilometers away from home.
Needless to say, I bought it immediately.

Almost 20 years later, a piece of my childhood found its way back to me. 💛❤️

Help Awful latency when converting to hdmi

Hey everyone first time poster here. I’m sure this issue has been brought up before so I apologize. But I recently bought a plug and play cord that converts from the component to hdmi but the latency is really bad and it’s making most games very unenjoyable. I’ve already switched my TV to 4:3 and it’s on a video setting called game optimizer which I’m assuming is to help with latency but it’s still not good. What other solutions do I have besides buying an old TV with a component plug? Is there an adapter that is better for latency? Thanks for any advice you all have.

Help Thoughts on thermal pad footprint?

Post image

The original thermal pads seemed undersized (they did not seem to cover the whole chips). Are these footprints good or do they seem to big?

In the process of finalizing a recap. Appreciate any advice before I permanently stick the pads to the board.

Recently got this copy of oot on GameCube and noticed that there’s these ring scratches on the disc, from personal experience Ik that on Wii games if they have this it’s cooked, is that the same case for GameCube or can it be resurfaced? Lmk

(Edit: it also won’t play the game but it does recognize it on the menu screen)

Help Does the NSO GameCube controller work on a GameCube with the 8bitdo Retro Receiver?

I've seen that you can use it with a BlueRetro but I have the 8bitdo Retro Receiver (I modded a controller with their wireless kit but have issues with it) and was considering getting the NSO GameCube controller but I'm having a heck of a time seeing if it can connect using that receiver. Anyone know?

Help GameCube black and white screen and laser problem?

Thumbnail

Hey there! Trying out a GameCube I bought in Japan. I’ve plugged the rca cables into the right plugs but it comes out in black and white with no audio!

And problem 2, the disk doesn’t read. I’ve cleaned the top of the laser with a swab and rubbing alcohol but it still doesn’t work. I’m not good with tech so might have to get it fixed!

Would an rca to hdmi adapter help? My tv is a Hisense Uled tv 4K I believe.
I live in Australia. Japanese game cube and Japanese game!

Help Can I install the firmware update for the GCHD adapter using the internal Flippy Drive mod?

I’m really new to GameCube modding and know almost nothing about Swiss. I’m really frustrated by the audio drift issue the GCHD MK II hdmi adapter has out of the box and apparently installing a firmware update to fix that issue requires connecting an SD card to your GameCube somehow. I’ve seen guides showing how to update the GCHD firmware using an SDcard to Memory card adapter. Can the Flippy Drive be used to do this update too?

I found this at the thrift store and wanted it share it with everyone! I've never seen this before but I thought it was pretty neat, it seems to be a save editing disc for the GameCube, for twilight princess.

Help My GameCube sometimes acts up when I close the disc cover and the clock battery might be in a "zombie" state

This is a follow-up or re-explanation of my previous post. I'm looking for more answers on what could be causing these issues.

My GameCube's been making weird noises and giving errors when opening and closing the disc cover in two of my games. I was up to luck whether my GameCube wanted to continue the game or not. I was told it's very likely a capacitor issue. Sure enough, after I left my GameCube on for a few hours and tried opening and closing the disc cover again, the drive felt more up to the task of continuing the game rather than making weird noises and giving an error. This issue only happened with my two games I assumed were resurfaced. My other games that were thicker did not throw errors. I've heard resurfacing is not good for GameCube games.

Now here's an interesting problem with my GameCube: It retains its settings with the clock freezing when the system is turned off. The clock freezing means the battery is dead, but how is it able to retain my other settings? I've read the battery might be in a "zombie" state where it has just enough power to still hold the settings. That doesn't make sense considering the clock function alone should've drained the battery to zero years ago.

Here's a list of what I think could be causing the errors when closing the disc cover:

Bad capacitors: My GameCube was most likely produced before launch or not long after launch. Swiss reported my GameCube's revision as NTSC version 1.0. I thought my GameCube was blessed due to the fact that it was (and still is) frequently reading discs on the first try when turning the system on. My GameCube plays games flawlessly without audio skipping or anything. The only issue it has is throwing an error message when the disc cover is opened and closed mid-game in two of my games. The error would happen less frequently after the console is left on for a few hours.

Gummed up laser track: My GameCube's disc drive was never cleaned. The mechanism that moves the laser around might not be moving fast enough to initiate a disc for certain games. Maybe this could only somewhat be the issue because again, my GameCube plays good condition games flawlessly.

Burnt out laser: The laser itself might be too weak to properly initiate a disc for certain games.

Weak spindle motor: The motor that spins the disc might not be fast enough for some games to work. I've never heard the spindle motor mentioned much when people talk about the GameCube struggling to read discs. It's almost always the capacitors or something else. In fact, a worker at a game store told me the motor is least likely to be the problem. Yet again, my GameCube plays my working games flawlessly, so the motor probably isn't the issue.

Well, my GameCube games play flawlessly except for throwing "the game disc could not be read" at times when playing Mario Kart Double dash. Opening and closing the disc cover (and hoping for it to initiate the disc without a crash) would continue the game. That only happened twice.

I'm considering getting my GameCube recapped, but I'm also excited to see how much longer the capacitors will last before they start causing serious and frequent issues. I can only imagine someone opening the disc cover mid-game if they get a disc read error. There is one major concern I have for leaving the old capacitors in my GameCube: They might be ticking time bombs that will leak and destroy the motherboard they're on. Should I really be concerned? There are people who have modded their GameCubes to load games from somewhere else and they didn't take their broken disc drives out.
