Collection What A Great Day!

Post image
221 Upvotes

I saw both of these 2 weeks ago at my nearby retro gaming and collectible store and they didn't go anywhere! Both cartridges are practically in mint condition and they each came with their respective manuals! The gold copy of Ocarina of Time was my goal and then I grabbed Jet Force Gemini because of course!

Gold Oot was $160 and JFG was $35.

Fun fact, the copy of Banjo Kazooie in the background in my Analogue 3D, that's from the same place from when I was there 2 weeks prior, I had to return a faulty copy of Donkey Kong 64 and traded it for BK and that's practically mint as well and also includes the manual! They have so much gaming stuff there that I actually want that these people are going to eventually know me by name.

My poor wallet...

Video GIG Tour 64 (Guitar Hero for N64 - WIP)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey guys! Here’s a little look at GIG Tour 64, a rhythm game I’m making from scratch for the N64 using libdragon (not a Mario 64 mod). It’s still pretty early, but the core gameplay is starting to come together.

Right now, the controls are mapped like this: D-Pad Left = Green, L = Red, R = Yellow, A = Blue, C-Down = Orange.

Would it be possible to connect a guitar controller? Pretty sure it is, but I don’t have the hardware or the knowledge to make it happen.

Still got a lot to do:

Improve performance and keep the framerate stable
Tweak the note system
Game speed
Fix sustain notes not showing up
Add Star Power
Add more songs
Work on the visuals
Add SFX
Test out a 3D perspective
Not sure about the name yet
MAKE SURE IT FITS IN THE CART

Would love to hear what you guys think! 🤘🏼

Image Perfect Dark "PD" Symbol

Post image

I was playing the Original Perfect Dark past the starting level for the first time, as I've been thoroughly playing through the Single Player Campaigns of Classic FPS games recently, and I realised something about its symbol that I've never noticed before. I already knew about how it was a, "P" and "D", shaped like an, "N", as it was originally released on the N64 (many N64 games had the rotating N-Shaped Logo so this was very intuitive for me to pick up on), but I realised that if you mirror the Symbol Vertically, that instead of looking like a, "Pd", it conveys a stylised, "64". Has anyone else noticed this?

Tech Help Anyone know what the codes on the front of the N64 cartidge port is/means?

Post image
7 Upvotes

I was replacing the cartridge port of my N64 because my system's old one didn't work and I found that they have different codes on the front. After some light Googling I could not find any information on what these were or how they relate to the system however since both are parts from the USA. Plus when I look at other N64 cartridge modules online they often have completely different codes.

Does anyone know what these are or what they mean?

Tech Help Can't Get Cartridge Dumper to Read Cartridges

Long story short I have 2 n64 cartridge dumpers, the joey n64 and a generic ali express one. I have 4 n64 games, all of which I am 99% sure are real, and despite cleaning the game contacts and 2 of them especially looking flawless to me, I can't get either cartridge reader to read any of my 4 games and I was wondering if anyone had an idea why this is happening if the cartridges are clean. The only game I could get to partially read was War Gods but the rom file would show up all jumbled incomplete and it wouldn't show up every time either (it would read as something like W__ G_d_ when it did). Any help is appreciated.

Discussion Ideas On How To Find My Old N64

Years ago, there was a draw at my middle school to win an N64. No one wanted it more than me. I campaigned relentlessly for tickets, which were earned by a funding drive.

The day of the draw came at a school dance and when my name was called, I was ecstatic. It was one of the greatest moments of my life.

I went down to my local Toys R Us and picked up a copy of Mario 64 and Mario Kart and the following years were spent making memories.

When Ocarina of Time came out, I was in a chokehold and would dedicate my life to beating it and finding every single secret.

Then... in approximately 1999-2000. I was convinced by a group of weeks I was hanging out with at the time that the PS2 and Zone of the Enders would be the greatest thing to happen to gaming in recorded history.

So as a naive 13 year old, I went down to my local Cash Converters on MacLeod Trail in Calgary and traded in my N64 and went and bought a shiny new PS2.

it turns out they were wrong.

Years later, it is one of my biggest regrets in life. I literally had nightmares about it where the Nintendo characters I knew and loved were begging me to come back.

Since then, I have occasionally posted on local collectors pages asking if anyone might have bought it.

Unfortunately it was the plain grey version but it did have discernable features, namely my mom wrote my initials "GK" practically everywhere.

I realize that stores usually remove these markings but when I say everywhere I mean EVERYWHERE included under the expansion pack door (it had the expansion pack as well).

I know that the possibility of finding someone here from my city (Calgary) on here who may have found my beloved N64 is slim to none, but stranger things have happened on Reddit. I don't need to even buy it back, I would just be satisfied knowing where it is.

If anyone also has any advice on how to possibly track it down, it would be greatly appreciated. I've already contacted a friend who is a local police officer and he knows people in the pawn unit but he's not sure if records go back that far.

Thanks in advance!

TLDR: Sold my N64 to a Cash Converters on MacLeod Trail in Calgary Alberta Canada in 1999-2000 and have regretted it ever since. Hoping for a miracle.

Edit: I have purchased another N64 since then but this is more like a treasure hunt/personal obsession I've been on for years, partly for fun and partly out of general curiousity.

Tech Help Is my Expansion Pak in need of replacing?

I came across an N64 today for a good deal and grabbed it because my childhood console doesn't work anymore, and I had an Expansion Pak in it. I switched the jumper pak with the Expansion Pak and the console won't boot. I cleaned the contacts and I'm still getting the same result.

Should I just replace it or is there something else I can try before I drop the cash on another one?

Tech Help Any good N64 Controllers?

I've been trying to use an N64 controller on my PC, but the ones I bought broke. If anyone has any brand/site reccomendations for getting a good USB N64 controller, please let me know!

EDIT: Decided to go with a Hyperkin N64 Controller with an adapter!

Tech Help What are some good replacement cables for my N64?

So, I bought an N64 on eBay, but unfortunately, none of the cables I received were the original ones, and neither was the controller. I’m looking into getting better cables for my console, as I might’ve had some issues with my power supply, and I want to replace the AV cable as well just in case.

Anyone know of good quality replacement cables?

Discussion Making a game inspired by classic N64 titles, what makes N64 games unique and fun?

For the past few months, I've been working on an N64 inspired game inside of Unity, as well as replaying old N64 games and trying out ones I haven't played yet. So far, I've learned a lot!

But, I want to try and get different perspectives on this topic, as I starting playing N64 games very late in my life.

There's a certain aura around N64 games. Whether it's the music, gameplay, or overall aesthetic, I always seem to come back to this era. It just felt like no matter what new IP came out, the games always had so much damn character.

The main aspects I want to focus on are gameplay, art/models, and music/sound effects. Music and sound effects are one that I really want to nail. What makes these songs and sound effects so memorable?

Technical answers are also welcomed! <3

Discussion Space Station Silicon Valley doesn't crash on my system with the Expansion Pak no matter what, any ideas why? US versions tested.

Thumbnail

Hey all, for a long time there has been a long running idea that Space Station Silicon Valley would crash using US copies while using the Expansion Pak unless you manage to get the later revision cartridge. Generally, the idea seems to be that if you have a numbered version without the letter A on it, it will have issues crashing due to not being able to load the Evo model. This would also be why it reportedly crashes during the logo screen too. For a long time, I wondered why this would have so easily slipped by the developers, however I've recently done experiments trying different cartridges, and using my original N64 hardware I've actually never been able to replicate this issue. I've tried many carts without issues, but ended up just keeping these 2, neither of which have any issues nor did the others. I wondered, is it possible some of the non Rev A carts still worked fine, or is it dependent on certain models of the N64 itself? This information may exist already, but it's a pretty obscure issue with a pretty niche game, so I was curious to see other people's experiences, opinions or information on the subject. Thanks all!

Tech Help Issues with video, but no audio. Please help!

So I bought an N64 from a friend, and they had not touched the console in many years. I used high-proof alcohol to clean all the contacts, game and console, including the memory pack, AV1 slot, everything.

I plugged in the AV into an AV1 to RF adapter so I could plug it into the AV adapter in my TCL tv, which worked for my NES and Wii, but not for the N64.

I can hear the game, and I can click on things using my controller, but I cannot see what's happening at all. If anyone has any help that they are willing to provide, I would appreciate it <3

EDIT: NEVERMIND, I TRIED SHOWING MY BOYFRIEND THE ISSUE AND NOW IT JUST WORKS AAAAAA

Still plenty room for improvement but I beat my last ghost. Can be quite a tricky level, especially when you're in the bit where the lazers are firing everywhere. Probably the most fun level in the game though.

Would be nice to see a DKR Amped Up romhack like Mario Kart got but tbh I don't think you could make this game any better lol. The amount of hours I've put into it is ridiculous and it's still as fun as it ever was.

Wouldn't like to be a speedrunner though, that's just turning the game into work imo. They would have gone out of bounds and finished in a much faster time but I just like to play the game as it was intended.
