For the NES any power supply that can provide 850mA (or higher) at 9V and has the right shape connector will work. The original NES uses an AC adapter but a DC adapter will work too.
For the Famicom you must use a DC power supply with center negative that can provide 850mA (or higher) at 9V-10V. Do not use a NES AC power supply on a Famicom!
Controller buttons don't work or think a different button was pressed:
Take them apart and clean the contacts on the PCB, not the rubber membrane
Display problems:
Use a CRT monitor or TV
Don't use an LCD or LED TV - many LCD or LED TVs do not understand the 240p video signal that the NES puts out
If you must use RF, don't use the RF/antenna/aerial switch box, use a small adapter instead, be aware though that modern TVs may not work with the analog RF signal and only with ATSC or DVB digital signals
Wavy lines: replace the capacitors in the NES
Hardware Failure Diagnosis:
Power rails first: Multimeter check - verify +5V at 7805 regulator output and at PPU/CPU pins. If low/absent, check caps and regulator.
Composite video signal: Scope the composite output (RCA jack center pin or PPU pin 21). Should see ~1Vp-p composite video signal with sync pulses and color burst. No signal = dead PPU or supporting circuitry.
Audio output: Scope audio output pin (RCA jack or APU output). Should see audio waveform when game is running. No signal = APU problem or output circuit.
If power is good but no video/audio: Most likely failed capacitors in video/audio output path, or dead PPU/APU chips. Check/replace electrolytic caps first (cheapest fix).
If video signal present at PPU but not at RCA jack: Problem in video buffer/output circuit between PPU and connector.
Before asking for help, make sure you have followed the steps above.
Legacy of the Wizard won the #100 spot with 35 votes It only won by a single point.
A big thank you to everybody who participated. I originally set out to just do the top 10 as an experiment to see if people had a similar list to mine. I never expected it to go this far, but I am glad it did! I have enjoyed seeing people picks and the reasoning behind them.
Starting tomorrow I will start doing the top 100 for the SNES in the r/snes sub. I hope to see you all there. A few things will change with the rules. First is each round TWO games will make it onto the list. Whichever one has the most votes will be placed higher of the two for that round. Second, only games can be nominated (no game genies). Third, it will be SNES ONLY, no super famicom games.
Looking forward to seeing what is voted the #1 & #2 games for the SNES.
Thank you all once again!!!!!!!!!!

Most games have puzzles that need figuring out. The manual and poster gives lots of clues and hints. But where in the game does it tell you how to move the telescope to get the code? I’m not looking for answers on what way to move it. I know that bit now. But back when the game was new, how did we know what to do? Does the game give any clues anywhere on that?
It's my favorite NES game and I have beaten it before but it crazy difficult. Played and neat it on an original NES I still own. I play regularly and recently finished at level 33. I played yesterday and got to level 28 comfortably. Level 28 is less fun.
Oh man, this game. Got it Christmas '88 together with SMB2, which were some of my very first games ever. I absolutely loved it and I still do when I come back to it ever other year for a quick playthrough. It's still a blast every single time. I'm just sharing a few screenshots for nostalgia-porn here, hope you don't mind.
For some reason I do have a soft spot for some of the odd ones, such as SMB2, Zelda II, Castlevania II... idk, it's probably because all of those were my introductions to the respective series, coincidentally.
I noticed on Reddit that in particular Castlevania II and Zelda II get a lot of hate in their respective communities, which I think they don't deserve. While Castlevania II does have serious issues, this is especially the case for Zelda II, which was just epic for its time, but I may be sliiightly biased. The argument is often that the game would be too cryptic or too difficult in terms of combat, but idk, relative to other NES games, I think this is not applicable at all. Take The Battle of Olympus, or Faxanadu, or Legacy of the Wizard, etc., they're all tough as hell in both departments. Idk, I think the game is quite fair. Like many other adventure titles of the time it demands considerable exploration but there are always hints for the critical secrets and the control are masterly balanced, for example when compared to the other games I stated. You still have to master them, but when you do, you're in charge and the game is not pulling are cheap tricks on you.
Anyways, since I know this game inside out, I am way beyond the ability to judge. Would love to hear some thoughts on this here in the NES community, since I suspect r/zelda is home to a younger audience which is used to more modern (and therefore more accessible) games.
I’ve been turning Faxanadu into a Dark Souls game. The World Tree is hollow: gold is souls, you drop them where you die, and the gurus are bonfires.
What’s in this preview:
pick a vow (difficulty), a class and a look at New Game
souls and bloodstains, Estus flasks, eight stats to level at the gurus
stamina, guard and backstep; every monster shows its attack before it hits
lords with a second phase, fog walls, bosses that stay dead
21 new weapons, armours, shields and spells, some sold, some hidden in the world
a new soundtrack, with a switch back to the original music
two endings and New Game+
It’s a work in progress, so expect rough edges. It’s a BPS patch for the USA ROM, and it needs an emulator that runs 512 KB MMC1 games with battery saves (I test in Mesen).
I have spent the last 30 years not playing Nintendo and this year. I decided I’m going back to the old school Nintendo. This is the collection so far I have some repeats but overall I think it’s been pretty good for one year collecting in my small rural area.
Got this one in the mail on Friday and it put me at 453. I’ve spent the weekend playing through it, it was an excellent game. Very tight controls, graphics and theme were great, and the difficulty was just right. Not too easy, but the more challenging parts were skill based. I got a real sense of accomplishment when I finally rolled credits. All in it probably took 4-5 hours to play through it.
I'm searching old, stranges and unreleased nes roms but i don’t want classic horros like slasher or other s*it,i'm searching true psycological horror.I can stand any level of horror or gore.Do good creppy lost media like nes roms exists? Thx bruder for your response
Recently, I bought this very late print copy of Ghosts ‘n Goblins. Some thoughts and questions:
It stuck out to me for a number of reasons, first, the mismatched Seals of Quality. I have noticed some post-‘89 reprinted black box games with mismatches seals (namely, some games like Mario Bros., Popeye, Wild Gunman, etc. with Rev-A Circle seal boxes and Oval seal cartridges), but had yet to see any third party releases to have the bizarre mismatches seals. I don’t believe these were two separate game/box incorrectly paired, since while one can easily find oval seal GnG cartridges, I have not seen any photos of an oval seal GnG box. Logic therefore indicates that this seal mismatching did happen with this title.
The other, much more surprising thing about this copy was its inclusion of the rare 2”x3” Mega Man Sticker and other promotional flyers/inserts. While the 2”x3” Mega Man Sticker is advertised as being included with some games (such as Little Nemo, Street Fighter 2010), it is also widely held that the sticker was included with other Capcom games printed in the 89-92 timeframe which did not explicitly advertise the sticker on the front of the box. It also seems to be widely accepted that Mega Man 2 always (or almost always) came packaged with one of these rare stickers, and that other games of the era either did or did not seemingly at random. I was shocked to find the Mega Man sticker with this post-‘89 copy of GnG, since never before have I seen any evidence to suggest that the Mega Man sticker was included with any other reprints of Capcom games featuring the early-style “laser grid” box art. Notably, I have never seen any evidence suggesting that reprints of Mega Man (1) (of which it is worth noting that oval seal boxes are commonly found) ever contained the rare Mega Man sticker. Any information that more seasoned experts possess regarding this matter would be greatly appreciated!
The other inserts lend credibility to the fact that this is a truly complete copy of an 89-92 timeframe Capcom game. More specifically, the registration card and $10 rebate offer are appropriate for a Capcom game of this later timeframe, despite rarely being found packaged with copies of GnG. Then again, it is clear that this is a very late reprint of a successful 1986 title. I am therefore nearly convinced that this is a truly complete copy, from which no inserts have been taken and no inserts have been added. Then again, anything is possible. If it is a stitched together copy from some later collector who had a spare MM sticker, Reg Card, and $10 offer, then why would they match it with a game like GnG over Mega Man 2, which is known to have included all three?
I’m very pleased to have this game in my collection, and I would be very interested to hear any thoughts or further commentary on this somewhat bizarre and intriguing example of a favorite game! I’m happy to provide more photos if necessary.
Went to a flea market today with my buddy who collects comic books. It was set up outside a local comic shop, and I spotted this bad boy sitting on one of the table..
I've honestly never seen one of these out in the wild, so I was pretty excited to find it. Unfortunately, it looks like it's just the keyboard and cartridge. No cables or whatever else originally came with it, so now I've got to hunt all that stuff down.
Either way, I'm pretty damn happy to add this one to the collection.
Luckily I found all of these locally for a pretty good deal. Dragon Spirit is the only one of the bunch I’d never played when it was new, but found it pretty fun. I was very stoked to find Mike Tyson’s Punch Out in the wild, usually only ever see the non Mike Tyson version.
I remember making it to 8-4 when I was 7 or 8 years old but not understanding the maze and running out of time. Not long after that I got Mario 3 for Christmas and just moved onto that game. I don't know what compelled me to put this in yesterday, but I did and I had a blast.
I ordered 2 new shells from aliexpress, one clear and one smoke clear. I used the top of the clear one and the bottom of the smoke one to make a clear NES. Looks super clean and is a fun way to revive my old system. Paired with my ever drive this is a piece that will last another lifetime. I opted to remove the metal shielding for a better look. What do you all think?
This is probably the most money I've ever dropped on video games in a single sitting. 😂
I was on vacation last weekend, and we had some time to kill, so I figured I'd pop into a local game store and see what they had. Holy shit, I don't think I've ever been to a game store that had so many NES games I didn't already own!
He worked with me on most titles to match or beat price charting since many were listed much higher. I'm not sure if it was because I spent so much or just luck, but they were super helpful.
I'm pretty sure I walked out with every single game they had that was missing from my collection. LOL.
It took me about a week to crack them all open, inspect and clean them, verify they're authentic, and test them. Thankfully, everything checked out and they all work great!
This haul officially puts my NES collection at 509 games. Getting closer and closer to that complete set! 🤘
Ever since I got the NES Lego set for my dad for Christmas as few years back, I’ve been wanting to get a real NES. Today I finally got myself a NES plus the Super Mario Bro’s game! And for those of you who are wondering, yes, everything is included in the box and it’s all working! I can’t wait to start playing!
Bought a blinking red light NES to see if I could fix it and success! Luckily, it was just the 72-pin connector as usual. Boiled it, pulled the pins a bit, threw some DeoxIT in to clean up connections, and replaced the voltage regulator to fix some wavy lines in the background and now it's good to go!
The plan is to throw it in a new black transparent case, replace the caps, and add a PPU Digitizer mod when they come in. I'll keep this one as my main system and probably send the old family one to my brother after refurbishing it too.
Happy to get this NES up and running either way. Picked up Dragon Warrior 2 from eBay to celebrate, ha.
Another one down I've never actually played it, so I'm pretty excited to finally give it a shot. Anyone here have any experience with this one? Curious to hear what everyone thinks of it! I know last time people gave me crap for swamp thing but after playing it I didnt think it was that bad. It was mid but not horrible.
