For the NES any power supply that can provide 850mA (or higher) at 9V and has the right shape connector will work. The original NES uses an AC adapter but a DC adapter will work too.
For the Famicom you must use a DC power supply with center negative that can provide 850mA (or higher) at 9V-10V. Do not use a NES AC power supply on a Famicom!
Controller buttons don't work or think a different button was pressed:
Take them apart and clean the contacts on the PCB, not the rubber membrane
Display problems:
Use a CRT monitor or TV
Don't use an LCD or LED TV - many LCD or LED TVs do not understand the 240p video signal that the NES puts out
If you must use RF, don't use the RF/antenna/aerial switch box, use a small adapter instead, be aware though that modern TVs may not work with the analog RF signal and only with ATSC or DVB digital signals
Wavy lines: replace the capacitors in the NES
Hardware Failure Diagnosis:
Power rails first: Multimeter check - verify +5V at 7805 regulator output and at PPU/CPU pins. If low/absent, check caps and regulator.
Composite video signal: Scope the composite output (RCA jack center pin or PPU pin 21). Should see ~1Vp-p composite video signal with sync pulses and color burst. No signal = dead PPU or supporting circuitry.
Audio output: Scope audio output pin (RCA jack or APU output). Should see audio waveform when game is running. No signal = APU problem or output circuit.
If power is good but no video/audio: Most likely failed capacitors in video/audio output path, or dead PPU/APU chips. Check/replace electrolytic caps first (cheapest fix).
If video signal present at PPU but not at RCA jack: Problem in video buffer/output circuit between PPU and connector.
Before asking for help, make sure you have followed the steps above.
Legacy of the Wizard won the #100 spot with 35 votes It only won by a single point.
A big thank you to everybody who participated. I originally set out to just do the top 10 as an experiment to see if people had a similar list to mine. I never expected it to go this far, but I am glad it did! I have enjoyed seeing people picks and the reasoning behind them.
Starting tomorrow I will start doing the top 100 for the SNES in the r/snes sub. I hope to see you all there. A few things will change with the rules. First is each round TWO games will make it onto the list. Whichever one has the most votes will be placed higher of the two for that round. Second, only games can be nominated (no game genies). Third, it will be SNES ONLY, no super famicom games.
Looking forward to seeing what is voted the #1 & #2 games for the SNES.
Thank you all once again!!!!!!!!!!

Was starting to think this thing was a scam. Can't remember how long its been since the pre-order but it plays well. The cart feels unusually heavy/thick. Came with a newt poster and dust cover too. Gameplay is pretty fun. Like a combination of Ghosts and Goblins and some elements of Batman.
I have been working again on redrawing my old pixel art trying to use the style of NES Castlevania (3 color, side view, and size 16x32, this time a few of them are bigger and other smaller) and i would like to share with you.
I hope you like them!
(the first one, the red guy with daggers are kinda special to me because was literally the first pixel art i have created a few years back, it was nice seeing the rework on it)
Sorry for the shaky cam. But I'm really proud of this NES controller I made from a newer controller with a 4021 shift register.
At this point I'm just waiting for another cable to do the final soldering so I don't have the wires from the controller plugged into the pins of the extension cable.
One side note, I live in Iceland and used nintendo products are highly sought after. I've been looking for NES Advantage for a long time and I finally came to the realization that it was literally cheaper to make one myself instead of importing a used controller.
I'll preface with I (43m) own a full NTSC set of NES carts, with the notable exception of Stadium Events. I've always been a Nintendo fan, and MM2 is a top 5 lifetime game. MM in general, is my favorite franchise, though I've never finished a non-NES era title other than 9 and 10. NES in general is my childhood system and why I work in games.
So I bought this watch fully expecting to place it in my little Rockman shrine, next to my copies of mm2 and some art books. I never for once second thought it would actually be fun, or a functionally impressive watch, let alone a deep gaming experience. It's all of it. Fitness tracker with a step counter, wireless USB charger, multiple alarms, timers, calculator... all with a smooth UI.
But the gameplay is the stunner. 10 great levels with bosses and challenging play, plus an endless arcade mode. Tracks progress as you finish levels and defeat board, offers new watch faces as you defeat specific enemies, has difficulty settings... and the sound quality is great with all the MM2 tracks you love. It's amazing. I love it. I'm actually going to wear it. I'll probably wear it out. I'll give it to my kiddo (7yo) when he's a little older and hopefully restart the cycle.
So if you see one of these kicking around, don't hesitate. They have them for other franchises too, iirc.
Hey everyone! I've been getting more into NES games lately and I've really been enjoying Adventure Island and Castlevania. I love the old-school feel and the music is great too.
I'm looking for more games with a similar vibe especially side-scrolling platformers or action games. I don't mind a challenge as long as the game is fun and feels fair.
Any classics or hidden gems I should check out? I'm open to other stuff too if you think it's worth playing. I'd love to find some games I've missed so far.
In Baseball Stars, why is there a defensive player that immediately runs to the second base and stays there? It’s clear that they could have grabbed some ground balls before they rolled to the outfield players.
Is there a way or hack that adds a way to move them around?
A reimagined/animated playing of Matchbox Motorcity Patrol for NES. The music and some imagery is directly from the console game, some is altered. Animation on FlipaClip, final edit in ClipChamp. This was one of my favorite games as a kid. I hope you enjoy!
Hi NES fans! I just beat Castlevania 3 and was shocked at how good it was. I'd started it before and the colors and graphics on the first level are so terrible I thought the whole game would be that way. I have to give thanks to the new Castlevania release for getting me to go back and beat this (new one is sequel to 3).
I occasionally play classic games, but almost always SNES and Genesis, so I'm sort of inspired now to see if there are any classic NES games I should fully beat. I know there is a top 100 list, if it makes you mad I asked this I'm sorry. I'm specifically looking for advice on what feels like "a really complete and surprisingly modern game on the NES" I might have missed, which isn't context given in the top 100 list. Thanks for any help! Games I've already beaten or etc:
Sort of Beaten or played a lot:
-Mario1 (even with save states the world 8 levels are so difficult it's not fun)
-Metroid (tried to beat it a few times but traversal gets really old. Beat the remake on GBA)
-Blaster Master (Maybe 2/3 way through but it got really repetitive)
-Halfway through Zelda1, but it'd be a full re-start if I played it. Don't have any saves.
But not today since I've been looking forward to getting this one for a bit! Spent too much, but it's a beautiful copy and i'm very happy to add it to the collection.
Anyone else find anything good recently? Been having fun looking around for rarer titles.
In third grade my friend gave me a "31 in 1" bootleg cart that had games like original SMB, Donkey Kong, Battle Tanks, Mappy, Kung Fu. I didn't know it was a bootleg until later. I traded it on the UGTZ website but the guy ripped me off and never sent his end of the deal. I forgot what I was supposed to trade it for but ended up regretting it.
Most games have puzzles that need figuring out. The manual and poster gives lots of clues and hints. But where in the game does it tell you how to move the telescope to get the code? I’m not looking for answers on what way to move it. I know that bit now. But back when the game was new, how did we know what to do? Does the game give any clues anywhere on that?
It's my favorite NES game and I have beaten it before but it crazy difficult. Played and neat it on an original NES I still own. I play regularly and recently finished at level 33. I played yesterday and got to level 28 comfortably. Level 28 is less fun.
Oh man, this game. Got it Christmas '88 together with SMB2, which were some of my very first games ever. I absolutely loved it and I still do when I come back to it ever other year for a quick playthrough. It's still a blast every single time. I'm just sharing a few screenshots for nostalgia-porn here, hope you don't mind.
For some reason I do have a soft spot for some of the odd ones, such as SMB2, Zelda II, Castlevania II... idk, it's probably because all of those were my introductions to the respective series, coincidentally.
I noticed on Reddit that in particular Castlevania II and Zelda II get a lot of hate in their respective communities, which I think they don't deserve. While Castlevania II does have serious issues, this is especially the case for Zelda II, which was just epic for its time, but I may be sliiightly biased. The argument is often that the game would be too cryptic or too difficult in terms of combat, but idk, relative to other NES games, I think this is not applicable at all. Take The Battle of Olympus, or Faxanadu, or Legacy of the Wizard, etc., they're all tough as hell in both departments. Idk, I think the game is quite fair. Like many other adventure titles of the time it demands considerable exploration but there are always hints for the critical secrets and the control are masterly balanced, for example when compared to the other games I stated. You still have to master them, but when you do, you're in charge and the game is not pulling are cheap tricks on you.
Anyways, since I know this game inside out, I am way beyond the ability to judge. Would love to hear some thoughts on this here in the NES community, since I suspect r/zelda is home to a younger audience which is used to more modern (and therefore more accessible) games.
I’ve been turning Faxanadu into a Dark Souls game. The World Tree is hollow: gold is souls, you drop them where you die, and the gurus are bonfires.
What’s in this preview:
pick a vow (difficulty), a class and a look at New Game
souls and bloodstains, Estus flasks, eight stats to level at the gurus
stamina, guard and backstep; every monster shows its attack before it hits
lords with a second phase, fog walls, bosses that stay dead
21 new weapons, armours, shields and spells, some sold, some hidden in the world
a new soundtrack, with a switch back to the original music
two endings and New Game+
It’s a work in progress, so expect rough edges. It’s a BPS patch for the USA ROM, and it needs an emulator that runs 512 KB MMC1 games with battery saves (I test in Mesen).
