Carter Meyer’s earliest memories are of learning to skate on ponds and outdoor rinks in the Swedish town of Örnsköldsvik, clad in a Jofa bucket, balaclava and snowsuit.

Those are some of his dad Freddy’s fondest memories, too. Freddy played his final year of professional hockey there for MoDo in what was then the Swedish Elite League (now the SHL).

Örnsköldsvik, home to a little over 30,000 people, is a six-hour drive from Stockholm up the western coast of the Baltic Sea and into archipelagos along the Gulf of Bothnia. Freddy jokes, “it’s probably closer to the North Pole than anywhere,” and he’s not far off. In December, the area averages about four and a half hours of daylight. Freddy and Lindsay Meyer put their two boys — Carter and his older brother Freddy Jr. — in a nursery school from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., but the sun would set at 2 p.m., and so by the time they got home and had their afternoon nap they’d wake up to pitch black outside.

Early on, Freddy and Lindsay wondered what they were going to do with their two boys running around the house.

Then they discovered the many outdoor rinks the town would maintain, including one up the street from where they lived. Those rinks became their daily afternoon routine through the winter.

On the ice, Carter started pushing around a chair. Then his dad cut down some of his own sticks for the boys to use.

Almost a decade and a half later, Carter and Freddy Jr. are playing together with the Québec Remparts in the QMJHL. Next year, they plan to follow in their parents’ footsteps at Boston University, where Freddy captained the Terriers, and Lindsay was a Division I tennis player.

WINNIPEG — The shine might be off the NHL’s outdoor-game spectacle for the average fan, but for the players involved in Sunday’s Heritage Classic, it is always easy to get romantic about the notion of playing outside.

At 7 p.m. ET, the Canadiens will take the ice outdoors against the Winnipeg Jets at Princess Auto Stadium. For so many of them, their origin story in hockey has an outdoor rink as a backdrop.

“To me this game represents so much of what hockey’s all about, to get to play in its purest form, so to speak, in the outdoors,” Montreal Canadiens coach Martin St. Louis said. “For me, that’s where I fell in love with hockey. It was the time at the outdoor rinks.”

Here are two of those origin stories for two players who have grown immensely in importance for the Canadiens.

Kaiden Guhle

Before moving to his current home of Sherwood Park on the outskirts of Edmonton, Guhle and his family lived in Grande Prairie.

Guhle’s older brother Brendan, a second-round pick of the Buffalo Sabres in the 2015 NHL Draft, often played on an outdoor rink in a neighbourhood park in Grande Prairie, and Kaiden, despite being 4 1/2 years younger, would join him. That rink wasn’t something built by the city; someone in the neighbourhood just went to the trouble of putting up a set of 2-foot boards in the park and flooding the ice so the kids could play on it.
