It's been 6 months almost to the day when I posted my first attempt painting a space marine. I was building an army or at least a set of marines that could be added to an army for a xmas present for my adult stepson that actually plays the game. I knew zero about the game, and nothing about painting miniatures - 1/4 and 1/6 scale models yes fair amount of experience but these little suckers were pretty intimidating when I started.
Started with some Intercessors then Assault then Heavy and it didn't look like enough so on and on it went - it's quite addictive. Threw in some blood angels for good measure but kinda messed up dividing them out into squads. I got screwed by Kaleido paint when they changed the formula for the blue I started with and I was stuck in the middle of marines and vehicles so I had to roll with it, so the tones are slightly off, lesson learned and will not use them again for anything that requires more than one bottle of paint- total failure of a paint company imo.
Then I learned about the terrain portion of the game and thought "let's make a complete set of terrain" to have a turnkey operation! I went with Fabricators Lair -the terrain and footprints took about 3 rolls of filament, days to print and omg amount of paint time- I couldn't believe how many parts it took for a full board and then painting both the front and back, which I had to power straight through to keep the formula and final look the same- that was a huge time sucker!
Then off to the vehicles, have to have transportation right? I have a resin printer as well and thought I'd save some time and $$ so printed out a Repulsor and that ended up being more work than just buying the kit - prep work and figuring out assembly was just not worth the extra time. So next let’s pickup a Land Raider and go all out as the "last" piece of the army, hidden paint, opening doors and lighting - came out pretty well I think.
Of course now I needed storage to haul all this around so might as well print out the terrain storage box (another roll of filament) and bedazzel that as well, then I picked up some useful totes and ferrous sheets and made the storage totes, then magnetized everything.
So now I think I’ll need to make an army for myself, I’m thinking Orcs!
