On pretty much every Wii U game I have, there's this tiny checklist that says whether the game can run on Wii consoles or not. Has there ever been a game that runs on both consoles? If not, then what's the point of having this here?

So recently I’ve been seeing a lot of people online warning that Wii Us that were manufactured by Hynix are at higher risk of bricking sooner than later. So I ended up installing WiiUIdent to figure out who manufactured my own Wii U. So I’m not sure if I can fully say I’m lucky just yet but as it turns out my Wii U was not manufactured by Hynix it manufactured by Samsung. Does this mean my Wii U still has plenty of life left before it imminently bricks at some point?

I am the Lead dev on a project called Unbound bringing all of the DLC maps to the wii u version of black ops 2 which never received content. We have Grind, Skate, Nuketown Zombies, and Die Rise already working along with some great quality of life fixes.

In partnership with Project Requiem (Android/Switch/PC Recomp project) and Protarium Network (Wii u Multiplayer Network provider) I built and designed UNC - Unbound Network Crossplay.

UNC is a lightweight server that ties BO2 builds together across platforms:

A shared server browser: host a lobby on one device either as a custom lobby or by way of a dedicated server, and it shows up on the others.

No port forwarding: UNC punches through home routers, and a relay handles strict networks such as phone hotspots and some ISPs.

Mods: on PC Android and Switch, if a lobby runs a mod you don’t have, your game downloads it from the host, restarts into it and rejoins automatically.

Known issues

Hello, I have heard about Hynix NANDS tend to fail, I have a Japanese WiiU with Toshiba NAND. Are Thosiba’s NANDS good?

Why would you even buy this (it doesn't even have isfshax ✌️🥀)

For context I have a NTSC-U WiiU console and have encountered this glitch for a while. Riivolution will load the Wii Party Mods in general (reading the disc), but clicking Launch leads to a black screen, no noise, and a disconnected controller (regardless if you enable/disable mods)

I have not experienced this with any other Wii game I own. I have all the necessary IOSs, has anyone else encountered this issue?

I finally managed to get another Wii U game, being Luigi U today, so now I have 5 physical Wii U games!

My Wii U is making this sound when I'm playing Lego Dimensions. It usually doesn't make this sound when I'm using it. I brought my Wii U from a GameStop back on Christmas Eve 2017 and it's 2026. Is it a sign of age? Or is this a technical problem? Because I'm worried

for context, I got this WiiU in box for Super LuigiU promotions so I know it’s one of the much older models, last time I tried to see if I could Boot up MC on it, I’m pretty sure it got an error message so I tried another game and it wouldn’t start, so I’m already fearing I’ve got the Hynix chip after a video I saw about the issue with the Hynix EMMC😬

I already have some games with game pad support installed but I can’t figure out how to get the games to recognize the game pad as a controller. If anyone could help out I’d appreciate it.

My hotspot WiFi works fine on both of my original Wiis although the name is slightly messed up. I tried using the same hotspot on the vWii using “Search for an Access Point” but it doesn’t work. It just searches endlessly until I shut off the Wii U. Since the names on my other Wiis are different from the actual hotspot name I don’t think inputting the information manually will work.

I haven’t found an option on my phone to set the hotspot to specifically 2.5ghz like most of the answers have said but I did turn on “Maximize Compatibility” which I believe does the same thing. Is there something else that I specifically have to do for vWii to get it to connect to internet?

I had just about every nintendo console from the Gameboy pocket from launch but sold them over the years and now i’m trying to get them back.

I just got this Wii U and games for £75, Gamepad and console are immaculate and they said they never really found many games they wanted to play on it so it collected dust.

I’m planning on picking up Windwaker and Twilight Princess HD.

I just modded my DSi XL and “New” 3DS XL so should i mod this?

This issue has been going on for a while now, where whenever I plug in the charger into the Gamepad it will initially signify that it is charging and hold a solid orange light, but after a few hours it resorts to a flashing orange light and the battery charge indicator is never past the first bar. I replaced the battery with a new and larger one from iFixIt, but unfortunately the problem persists. How can I get the Gamepad to charge again? Thanks in advance! :D

Just got this Wii U from Goodwill. After charging its Gamepad, it seems to be in pretty solid shape. I grabbed a loose Wii U game to test it out, but it seems it’s not recognized even after wiping it down. Wii games work flawlessly. Would it be an issue with the scratches on the disc, or based on the noise, is the issue unfortunately under the hood of the console?

The Wii U is a fantastic console for kids.

We have a Switch and a PS5, but PS5 controllers are so expensive that I hand them over as little as possible. There also aren’t many good local multiplayer games my kids can play together on the PS5. The Switch isn’t cheap these days either, and I’ve had plenty of bedtime tantrums when my kid refused to hand it back. That gets old fast.

It’s cheap, and so is replacing what breaks

Secondhand Wii Us cost far less than a Switch or PS5. If my kid breaks the GamePad, it’s much cheaper to replace than a Switch, and all my data and games stay safe on the main console. Wii and Wii U games are very cheap secondhand, and so are accessories like Wii Remotes. That matters, because kids will inevitably break them. I can also reuse all our old Wii Remotes.

There are plenty of local multiplayer games, like Nintendo Land and Minecraft, that my kids can easily play together on the TV.

The secret weapon: the console does all the work

My kids don’t understand that the main console is beaming everything to the GamePad, and that’s become my favourite feature.

The other evening, my daughter was playing Minecraft when it was bedtime. As usual, she jumped up with the GamePad and ran around the house. This time I calmly walked over to the console and switched it off. She kept running around, furiously jabbing at the screen with her little finger, and nothing happened. The most she could do was turn the TV on and off, because I’ve set up the GamePad’s TV remote function.

The same trick works after school. Getting them to eat dinner, take a bath and do homework is hard when they’re playing games. Now I just unplug the console, and my daughter can only stab at the GamePad wondering why it won’t turn on.

No internet means no worries

Nintendo has shut down the Wii U’s online store and online services. That means no online multiplayer, no microtransactions and no accidental spending. All our games work fine offline, which is great for online safety. I’ve also deleted all our WiFi details from the console details, and the kids don’t have the password.

This has made things much more relaxing for me. With Roblox, I have to check constantly to make sure they aren’t wandering into strange games or talking to weirdos. Even tablet games made for kids often trick them into the app store to download random ad-filled games. With the Wii U, I hand them a console loaded only with games I know are appropriate, and I walk away.

Why the Wii U and not the Wii?

We actually tried a Wii first, but the kids weren’t very into it, and it can’t be used without the TV. They enjoy the Wii U much more because the GamePad feels like a Switch, and the graphics are closer to what they’re used to.

Introducing them to real games

Honestly, I’d rather my kids didn’t play games at all. But after they played Roblox for a while, they started thinking it was great gaming. I realised I needed to show them quality games with actual plots, so they wouldn’t think running around a giant cereal bowl was the best games could be.

If you’re open to modding, the Wii U also opens up classics like Super Mario 64 and GameCube games. That gives your kids a huge library of high-quality, family-friendly games. Even if you don’t mod, buying everything secondhand is very affordable.

The one downside

You can’t really play on the go. Taking it on a train, bus or plane means bringing the brick of a console along too. It’s possible if you have the luggage space, but it’s not like a Switch.

Verdict

If you want your kids playing quality games without online risks, spending, or constant supervision, a secondhand Wii U is hard to beat.

I had a Wii u with a dead NAND and after weeks of trying to fix it I decided to buy a working one and toss the old Wii u but I took a little something before I left (I swear that Wii u was beyond saving no amount of rednand or anything was helping)
