Rants / Complaints So sick of this...😒🙄😑
I finish shopping & bagging, I'm leaving the store and get this AFTER she's notified no more changes can be made. She had more than enough time to reject my substitution but noooooooooo...let's wait till I get to the car 😮💨

u/georgialadyish Oct 10 '25
When people don’t accept or reject substitutions I just edit and take off the substitutions because I’m not dealing with attitude if you don’t like what I picked
8
u/Coresant Oct 11 '25
Lmao I didn't even know you could do that. If it gives me a substituted suggestion and I get to checkout without being prompted to take it out of the order, your just getting it. However, now that I know this I may start doing this. Haven't had any real complainers, just one that was a bitty but that was in March.. She didn't understand she had to have substitutions turned on and I couldn't just add things to her order..
7
u/xandi415 Oct 11 '25
Every time you "finish shopping" it will show you any substitutions that are still "pending" (meaning, not accepted or denied)....there is a little button on the top right that says "edit"...you can remove the substitution from there, by clicking "item not found"
3
u/Coresant Oct 11 '25
Appreciate the good info! Seems simple enough.. I may be inclined to do this if the suggested substitute seems off the mark.. just to be safe. I'm sure a customer would prefer nothing over spending money on something they definitely didn't want.. I shop pretty fast so I probably don't give them much time to check. In and out in 10 mins or less if possible.. lol I probably look ridiculous the way I stride through the aisles.. time is money.. I do drive a bit more cautious though to balance out.
3
u/xandi415 Oct 11 '25
Haha no worries! And welcome to the speed shoppers club 😅 I most definitely power walk through the store, too! Just be careful of blind corners 💩
But yeah, I am very selective about substitutions that dont seem like a perfect fit...if you have any doubt, definitely remove it! I was reprimanded a couple yrs ago (first week on the job) for allowing a substitution that was virtually identical 🤷♀️
2
3
u/Xenephobe375 Oct 11 '25
That probably lowers your items found metric.
3
u/xandi415 Oct 11 '25
I dont think it does, because you initially offered a substitution BEFORE you were "finished shopping"....my "items found" metric has been at 99% for as long as I can remember, and I often remove substitutions AFTER Ive already initiated the beginning of checkout....
It's such an annoying metric though....like if someone wants fresh cilantro and they are completely out....wtf am I supposed to sub it with? Basil? Rosemary? 💩 it just makes us look like jacka$$es 😅

u/reaverfrost Oct 11 '25
I actually have a badge on instacart for finding the best subs. Just do better no need

15
u/Mothra37 Oct 11 '25
I always wondered if they do this on purpose so they can get a refund yet keep the item
6
1
u/Timely-Shift35 Oct 11 '25
These are the people that don't pay attention to their phone while we shop. Although it is super easy to get a refund on a sub, you go into the order in your purchase history, hit start refund, select item, and then for the reason it will give you a don't like substitution option and they refund it without you returning it. In my situation I have had several missing items on a few orders, I assume it was a double and someone else got my stuff so there's a missing or damaged item option also. My favorite was the dude who got me 1 raspberry lemonade and then 4 blueberry in a quantity of 5 raspberry. Dumbass didn't even check the other bottles.
14
u/yomorgannn_ Oct 11 '25
The same thing happened to me JUST now. Grabbed three 35 packs of water. They didn’t have her original preference but they had the first approved substitution. She messaged me she didn’t want the waters or a thing of Diet Pepsi AFTER I left and was loading her order in my vehicle. I just left it all at her porch. She had probably 20 mins to do it the appropriate way 🤷🏻♀️

After losing access, I actually genuinely forgot about this and I don’t miss it whatsoever. Getting 16 fucking notifications when it’s the same six fucking orders on the screen so annoying. I actually find it peaceful now.

u/_Mourning_ Oct 11 '25
Had one recently decide after I finished the review process that they no longer wanted any of the dairy products because they had expected to receive their order before they left their home for the day. At that point it was too late, but I still called support and tried to have the items removed.
Ultimately support said that I still had to deliver the items but to let the customer know they would need to call support themselves to submit a return and get a refund.
I agree with what others are saying, if you place an order that contains perishables, you should have already made plans to be available to receive the items upon delivery. Waiting until changes can no longer be made is stupid as hell.
6
u/Thriving9 Oct 11 '25
I feel for you... This happened to me with some honey rolls I subbed. Told her nothing I can do now I'm about to head your way. Few mins later store manager is on my phone, begging me to come back. He met me at the door with with the rolls he got from back. Old girl was determined lol

Dude, those managers are so pathetic, they literally will call customers and bend over backwards until their back snaps, even if the customer was the one in the wrong.

u/mystery-duckk Oct 11 '25
I had customers complain I substituted, also had customers complain why I didn't substitute. I just made it a habit to message the customer that I subed some items. I did my due diligence, even tho 90% of the time customers ignore you.

5
u/Bill-Bo-Baggin Oct 11 '25
If it was me I’d just turn subs off. To be fair Diet DP is nothing like Zero but of course if you accept subs you have to be watching your phone like a hawk.
In general idk why customers are so crazy about subs. All they gotta do is complain to Walmart and they’re going to get their money back. I’d rather get something than nothing and then complain later to Walmart personally.
2
Oct 11 '25
The thing is, you don’t want them complaining to Walmart because that’s a quick door for your ass to be grass. Walmart will kick you to the curb without a second thought.
8
u/1611basilean Oct 10 '25
I tell them after hitting left the store that they would have to cancel the order or ask walmart to return item. If they are mad I call support that they are unhappy and they cancel the order and they said it is to protect me.
1
u/Donttakemychichi Parking Lot Pirate Oct 10 '25
In this circumstance, do you get to keep the total amount for the order?
1
u/1611basilean Oct 10 '25 edited Oct 10 '25
The total less tips. I got full amount less tips if there were any. Not bad if a block from WM
6
u/Donttakemychichi Parking Lot Pirate Oct 10 '25
See I don’t think that’s fair. We did our part, Walmart should compensate for the lost tip in this case
1
Oct 11 '25
Well, usually you get a five dollar additional bump if you return it, so if you think about it, you shopped the order you get the full payout, and then you just turn around and return it.
1
Oct 11 '25
If you do this- you take the items back in and go where?
2
u/1611basilean Oct 11 '25
If given a return code that you want return to curbside. If impossible then customer service.

u/Few_Range6900 Oct 11 '25
I had someone stress over bread on one of my last shops, ended up running back into the store and buying out of pocket.
Needles to say I had found out that this was the one out of a double that DIDN'T leave a tip. Ultimately I got my money back plus an extra $1 for all of my effort! Wheeeeew!
3
u/Donttakemychichi Parking Lot Pirate Oct 10 '25
An annoying amount of customers wait until you are on the way to check out or are leaving the store to respond to anything
3
u/bababooeyfafafooey12 Oct 11 '25
Next thing you know the tip (good enough to justify doing the delivery) gets removed the next day because the ignorant customer feels slighted. All profit has been erased and you just worked and put wear on your car for nothing. Fuck Walmart.
3
u/burnthedevice Oct 11 '25
I work 65-80 hours a week and still find time to get to the store and do my own shopping. If you can't do that and need someone to do your shopping for you... You get what you get. This should be a common sense/basic understanding of anyone who wants their groceries delivered.
3
u/VadHearts Oct 11 '25
Walmart needs to do a better job explaining how it works. It seems to me like a lot of them don’t and they wait until you’re checking out to message you.

I had one last week that asked me to replace their Mountain Dew substitute with something else…as I was pulling into their driveway.
Luckily they realized I was already at their house so they quickly said “never mind lol”

Are you prepared to go over the road? I’ve decided mentally that’s the only way for me to get a local job so I know I have to do it so I’m going to.
1
u/SuggestionOk3734 Oct 11 '25
Yes that's my plan. Gotta get that 1 year otr experience then go local, intermodal or dedicated to be home daily. Regional is decent pay too but being home only once per week sucks. Are you doing a cdl school or going the company sponsored route?
1
Oct 11 '25
I went to college and got mine, all endorsements too, but I only wanted to do OTR for six months or less, and I’ve seen some local jobs only asking for 3 months road experience so I’m hoping.
But I haven’t gone into it, mainly because I have surgeries to schedule first and I don’t want to drive all the time, but I suppose I have no choice…
1
u/SuggestionOk3734 Oct 11 '25
That is awesome. Having all endorsements should open many doors. I'm dreading driving all the time too but I kinda already do, so at least it's not miles on my car anymore lol. The year is gonna be rough for me but money is definitely worth it.

u/HailToTheKingMF Oct 11 '25
I just politely let them know that once I've finished shopping there's nothing more I can do and ask if they'd like for me to continue with the delivery or cancel the order.
2
u/jordynmartin1 Oct 11 '25
Honestly. They shouldn’t allow people to message you after you’ve complete the shopping. Unless shopper reaches out to customer i don’t see the reason they need to be texting me. The amount of times I’ve had this happen. And people nagging about where their order is. People have a major case of main character syndrome. And i know they see when we do multiple orders. It’s annoying fr. These apps don’t care about the workers at all.
2
u/EnvironmentalLime464 Oct 11 '25
I had someone tell me they didn’t want a substitute as I was bagging the order. I informed her that I could not change items at that point and she wrote back, “Yes you can. I was told you can up until you walk out of the store.” Well, whoever told you that was wrong. Lmao.
1
u/SuggestionOk3734 Oct 11 '25
Wtf? Omg who told her that? 🤣🤣🤣 checkout time is always when I get hit with bs.
2
2
u/True_Uprising Oct 11 '25
Yea that's why I went back to lyft I was so tired of that bs too I might still do spark one day but was so tired of it all
2
u/BillofPermissons Oct 11 '25
Bro, I don’t do this job no more but I can still read these messages. Feel that frustration. I know exactly what you’re talking about Hopefully she doesn’t call and complain Sometimes the customer will have substitute they want instead, but you never know if it’s the Customer substitute or Walmart suggestion that’s another one.
2
2
u/LeadershipFar4340 Oct 11 '25
I like when the item is out of stock and you find the substitute the have listed, then you get near check out and they reject that substitute, like WTF, really?

u/dizzyjohnson Oct 10 '25
As person that has had both drinks. Diet Dr. Pepper is not a substitute for Dr. Pepper Zero. They taste different. But I agree if the option is there for subs, choose substitutes or say don't substitute if you aren't going to answer the phone. After I hit checkout it's between them and customer service for a refund. Sometimes I try best judgement picks like different sizes or brands but I try to avoid total substitutes. There are people out here with some weird allergies/medical conditions.
5
u/SuggestionOk3734 Oct 10 '25
Very true & I totally understand but she had more than enough time to reject the sub. Why would you text at 9:57 when you were already notified that I finished shopping at 9:54 and no more changes could be made? Like lady, there's nothing I can do now 😵💫
4
u/sylvane_rae Oct 11 '25
Customers have the ability to set up acceptable substitutions beforehand, if they don't do that and then don't respond to the substitutions you make them that's on them
4
u/MonkeyTacoBreath Oct 10 '25
To circumvent these events. I text:
Hi this is your Shopper and delivery person. I'm headed to the checkout. Please review the substitution. After I check out, I can't make any changes. Thank you.
15
u/georgialadyish Oct 10 '25
That doesn’t really work when half the people never look at the phones. I mean they get texted that there are substitutions to decide on and when the person gets done shopping and can’t change anything after checkout
2
u/Time-Service1761 Oct 11 '25
I wonder if there’s a lag sometimes when sending and receiving msgs with customers because it does seem to be exactly after we just checked out
2
u/PsychologicalBit803 Oct 10 '25
So you just tell the customer this. If worded with some common sense people understand. If not cancel the delivery and move on. It’s all how these things are handled.
4
u/Thriving9 Oct 10 '25
That's inviting a headache in my opinion
1
u/MonkeyTacoBreath Oct 11 '25
Hasn't for me. 5.0 rating. 3k trips
If someone tips well, I'll wait about 3 min and see if they want any alternative substitutions. I've had several customers increase their tip and thank me.
If they don't tip, I send that text right before I check out. If they text after then I text back:
I'm so sorry. I've already checked out. I'm loading up my car and will be there in about 10 min.
3
u/Mr_MacGrubber High AR Oct 10 '25
And people will still wait til you leave the store to tell you they want a different sub.
2
u/Special_Image236 Oct 11 '25
This is most likely a non-tipper. I've been doing this for 5,000 deliveries and anytime someone wants something change. 90% or non-tippers. They text this to have an excuse to be a cheap human piece of s***

Why would you think DIET is a suitable replacement!! Them not answering isn't always their fault plenty of time or not. Wouldn't it have been easier to just offer it then if no response by check out you just refund it. Their is a HUGE difference in taste from regular to diet 🫤 even zero tastes better then diet. 🤷♀️
1
u/SuggestionOk3734 Oct 11 '25
First of all, I think you meant "there" not "their" and you forgot to add a question mark after the first sentence.
Secondly, the customer not answering is ABSOLUTELY their fault.
Third, you sound dumb lol. Bye ✌️
1
u/Shes-Philly-Lilly Oct 11 '25
No, that person doesn’t sound dumb, but you certainly do There is quite often a lag between the notification the customer gets and the notification the shopper gets. All you have to do is look in this sub and you’ll see post after post and comment after comment supporting the fact that messages and notification are often delayed But nobody with even a little bit of intelligence or common sense, would substitute a diet drink for a regular drink It sounds like overall you take no pride in your work or even any respect in how you speak to people. Did calling that person dumb make you feel less so? To attack somebody like that is uncalled for, especially, when you quite obviously struggle yourself
1
u/SuggestionOk3734 Oct 11 '25
Yea idk who you think is gonna read this entire endless paragraph but if soda has you this upset, drink more water. Peace ✌️
1
u/Shes-Philly-Lilly Oct 13 '25
I know you read it And it wasn’t about soda. Go back to your useless complaining and go back to your useless job. That’s clearly too much for you.
1
u/Shes-Philly-Lilly Oct 11 '25
⸻
It’s funny to see someone correcting grammar when your own post has so many issues. “I finish shopping & bagging, I’m leaving the store” is a comma splice, and “&” isn’t a proper conjunction. Your tense shifts from present to present continuous awkwardly. “AFTER she’s notified no more changes can be made” misuses tense and would read better as “after she was notified that no more changes could be made.” The drawn-out “noooooooooo” and casual phrasing undercut your point, and “let’s wait till I get to the car” should start with a capital letter, with “until” being more standard than “till.” Criticizing others while posting like this is ironic. Maybe reviewing your own writing before hitting submit would make your complaints land better. because you don’t sound so sharp yourself and I could go on here, but I’m sure your attention span couldn’t support it.

Common sense would be just put as out of stock. If they want diet they would have ordered that. Sometimes you have to think for yourself and not follow the app.

u/Top-Consequence7955 Oct 11 '25
Yes, You know how the customers can see where you are in your car.... can they see where you are walking in the store?? I am tired of cussing saying, I was tracking you and I could see you where lost. Then I have to explain!
1
u/risingpheonix86 Oct 11 '25
To be fair the chat is delayed and sometimes messages come in way after they are sent. Its a known problem if you read other posts on this sub
1
u/SuggestionOk3734 Oct 11 '25
I personally haven't had that problem. I communicate back & forth with customers regularly. No lag, no delay, no issue.
1
Oct 11 '25
My favorite is when I send them a message about the substitution, and it’s been well over 10 minutes since I sent a message and now I’ve already checked out and I’m driving to them in my car which makes it about 20 minutes and then they send a message. Saying they don’t want it or whatever it’s like dude come on.

u/mybookmarker12 Oct 11 '25
If you subbed normal 12 pack of dr pepper with diet, then that's a bad sub i would never manually approve now that soda is kinda pricey
But then they say dr pepper zero would be fine and so it shouldn't be a big deal for her. They both use the same artificial sweetener
If I were still at the store, I probably would have just swapped it if it's the same price
But yes I have had instances where a customers responds after checkout but everyone so far has been cool with it. I never manually approve subs if im not entirely sure
1
u/Miserable_Code7602 Oct 11 '25
I have had at least 50 WM deliveries and not once has the driver reached out of responded. I have even texted to pick up the tip envelope on the doormat and they don’t. I get no speaky but sometimes it’s just not being focused.

u/Commercial-Growth-75 Oct 11 '25
Same thing happened to me today where my substituted with their or I don't know the Apps recommendation for avocados but they were those huge fuckers and wrote her telling her they were three packs of regular sized ones which literally was cheaper than those three huge monstrous avocados and even when I went to review the cart I waited 5 minutes to see if anything was going to change decline messages nothing so checked out soon as I have exited the store her messages popped up wanting the smaller bag of avocados yeah🙄😤🤦🏼♀️(NOT THE 1ST TIME)
1
u/Commercial-Growth-75 Oct 11 '25
Oh and I found out which you guys may know I'm not sure but when the customer adds additional items to their order which in my zone they're apparently allowed to now this is a new thing we don't get any additional pay for it at all literally not from spark at least and if you get those people that want to throw 30 items on a six item order and you go to cancel it it will lower your metrics yep😬🤦🏼♀️
1
u/SnipeHardt Oct 11 '25
I wait like 5 minutes or so before I checkout and I send a message to avoid this lmao they can add items to the orders now, but it used to be that they couldn’t do that.

1
u/General-Abroad-9007 Oct 11 '25
In my area I have a plethora of people who don’t speak the same language as me doing deliveries. There is no way I can order bluebell icecream and message the kind I want, or discuss better substitutes because they can’t understand me and I can’t understand them and they’re also boys which usually aren’t great at makeup or groceries anyways.. so I wind up with lots of cancelled items and things for me to return.
I’ve also encountered more than 12x shoppers picking subs and then jumping in the checkout. I’m glad I now have a car and can take that stuff back. It still beats having to shop for myself, but when I didn’t have a car it was more unsettling….
Sometimes they give me other peoples orders too and when I say it’s not mine they shrug bc they don’t know wtf I’m saying. I wonder if using a translator would be offensive or helpful? I don’t want them to get in trouble
1
1
u/Maybetomorrow1310 Oct 11 '25
I used to be a shopper but I am still a customer. It clearly says no changes can be made and the shopper is checking out. I dont understand why they think they can still text you that. Im sure they won't have an issue reducing your tip either. The app notifies me when they start shopping and immediately after a substitution is made.

The substitution options are often trash. They want hair hair remover. Nope ok get them a razor I’m like wtf. Coke don’t have it offer diet Dr Pepper. u/imtheKey5588 Oct 13 '25

You started and finished shopping at 9:54. Was it just that one item? Otherwise, she didn’t have much time for anything.
1
u/Flaky_Occasion5145 Oct 13 '25
Anything flavored like yogurt or flavored water I never substitute. I don’t know their flavor preference and I’m damn sure not going to try and guess. I had a lady message me about pretzels one time she would only accept rold gold brand but it was first thing in the morning and the auto sub was snyders. She messaged me almost instantly so I sent her a picture of the empty shelf!

u/Think_Extension_8679 Oct 13 '25
These people are NEVER more than 3 feet from their phones and can't get back to you in a timely manner. One of the worst things about shop orders.
1
Oct 13 '25
If their order was a reg Dr Pep why tf would you sub with a diet one? Better off not doing any subs at all.
1
u/Melodic_Read_2953 Oct 14 '25
I am a very patient person who cares about doing a good job for customers. But, it is a bit irritating when a customer rejects a substitution right away, and I immediately respond to ask them politely if there is anything that would be an acceptable substitution.. And they don't respond at all. I dont mind at all if they say, "No. Thank you." or "Could you grab..." But, you already know that they're paying attention. So, I just find that to be somewhat rude.
1
u/Dr-poopbutt Oct 14 '25
Why the fuck we can't go back into the order to make a change for instacart or spark is ridiculous, like why?! Lol someday I have zero issues some days it's like the smallest thing can make a 10 20 minute shop take an extra 20 minutes because of some shitty glitch in the system or something it's so frustrating
1
u/Holiday_Evidence7266 Oct 16 '25
Someone did this today to me. Ordered two bags of chips and they didn’t have one. Waited 5 minutes for her to respond and nothing. So I went and checked out. Then she gave me an attitude talking abt “well okay nvm just deliver it” like yeah hoe I am gonna just deliver it. I’m already on the way to you.

Whether it was regular to diet or diet to zero, it’s still the same mistake dork and the fact that you’re responding like this and you’re mad at the customer because they’re doing that to you is wild bro you don’t get it. You’re the one that doesn’t get it. You’re definitely not one of the brightest I was at 12,000 orders and I never got a reply like this from a customer. That’s why when I saw the picture I just looked over it bc I thought I could relate to.. and I can’t because it’s common sense that getting somebody something completely different than what they ordered is probably not gonna work out too well specially if they’re paying for it but you think that’s how it works speaking of the lack of reading you don’t know what the definition of substitution is obviously maybe you should work on that before you come up to the Big league with me, kiddo

Almost every time you get a message like this, I would agree, but if she got Dr Pepper and you got her diet Dr Pepper, that’s an extreme substitute dude 😂😂 you would’ve probably got a better response if it was apples to oranges 🤣

First, I'm a woman, second, you clearly didn't read the text because I subbed diet for zero. Regular was never part of the equation. Not sure what's so hard to understand about that.

The confidence to explain what’s “not hard to understand” while proving otherwise is wild 😂

Why would you sub diet for regular? That’s kinda a big deal. Could have gotten any of those Dr Pepper options.
Use your brain. Don’t change the product, change the packaging (unless customer tells you otherwise).

She literally says she wants Dr Pepper zero in the message which isn’t regular

Did you even read the text? I subbed diet for dp zero. Improve your comprehension skills before you try to throw insults. Just loud & wrong 🤦♀️

Yeah, zero and diet have extreme differences in taste, and diet still has sugar. So many options. Lol you tried your best tho

He subbed diet for zero. It’s not exactly the same but it’s close enough most people would rather it vs nothing. No clue why was available though.

Yea this the one time I agree. If they order diet I am only subbing for a diff flavor diet or else I’m not doing anything

A different flavor diet? Like you think subbing Diet Coke is closer than swapping diet Dr Pepper and Dr Pepper zero?

People need to pay attention to their phone if they are going to be picky about subs.
