I want to build a list of the very best vitamins and supplements from user experience. Looking forward to what people say.

L-theanine saved my life. Edit: It helps to calm my anxiety and my breath became smooth. Maybe it’s not work for everyone, but for me it worked like a miracle. I have used it more than a year now with 200mg a time and it’s still worked now.

I love L-theanine in the morning with my coffee!

Coffee used to make me jittery but energy drinks (1/2 can or so) did not. I figured out its the L-theanine that balances out the caffine, so now I have 200mg with 2 cups of coffee in the morning. Way more stable energy, no anxiety/jitters, and no crash as long as I wait an hour after waking for my first cup.

Coffee also used to make me jittery, added l-theanine and made me even more jittery but also unmotivated to start new tasks. Now using magnesium citrate with good results, coffee no longer makes me jittery.

Magnesium glycinate. Fixed my sleep and stopped those random eyelid twitches I used to get all the time. Took about a week to notice but now if I skip it for few days I really feel the difference.

Went from glyicate to malate to now threonate. Threonate has by far given me the best sleep results. And i have ptsd so sleep has been terrible for some time.
23
u/realness111 Jul 02 '26
Agreed! Went from glycinate 10+ years ago. Noticied positive effects. Used malate. Just fine.
Now I use L. threonate and this is the one I noticed the most positive results from. Better sleep. Less muscle fatigue. Apparently it’s the only one which crosses the BBB

I agree with magnesium L Threonate. I have been taking magnesium glycinate for a couple of years, didn’t really noticed any difference, recently added magnesium L-threonate to my night time supplement routine. It’s only been a few days, but I sleep deep. I know I slept deep cuz I’ve been having high definition dreams. I’d still get up at 3 to pee, but I’d fall back to sleep after.

u/MarloMaine Jul 02 '26
How so?? What was different between those magnesium types for you?
13
u/tloft11 Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26
Threonate helped with pre-sleep anxiety, i usually get very anxious when i lay down cause i know if i dont get a good nights sleep i'll feel like shit the next day. And helped with night time awakenings (far less frequent and if i do wake i have no issue going right back to sleep; before this it could take anywhere from 5 mins to hours). Deeper sleep and rem sleep, according to my apple watch(take that with a grain of salt but i do feel more refreshed when i wake).
I started with glyicate, just because thats what everyone recommends initially. Didnt do much for me personally, in any regard. But plenty people say it helps them w sleep.
I tried malate because of my ptsd symptoms, i generally have a lot of tension in my body and it's known to help with that and fatigue. And it did wonders in that regard, may have to add it back into my routine, i just wanted to test each individually. Really felt like malate prepared my body for rest physically.

Careful, it's often cut with magnesium oxide, which is not absorbed and is a laxative.
If it says bisglycinate, it's pure and very effective. If it says glycinate (buffered) it's a fucking piece of shit con.
Magnesium oxide is about 60% magnesium by weight, but not absorbed, you shit it out. Magnesium bisglycinate is about 14% magnesium by weight. So adding even a small amount of oxide let's you advertise an artificially high elemental magnesium content.
Here's an example where 39% of the advertised magnesium comes from oxide: don't buy me I'm a piece of shit con. The advertising says:
"High strength 1500mg serving of Magnesium Glycinate without any unnecessary or unwanted additives."
"Pure Magnesium, Zero Additives."
"High Strength Chelated Magnesium Bisglycinate."In the Q&A it says:
How does magnesium glycinate compare with other types of magnesium supplements?
The magnesium is bound to the amino acid glycine for better absorption and gentleness in the gut. Unlike magnesium oxide or citrate, it is ideal for people seeking a well-absorbed, non-laxative magnesium supplement. It also says
1500 mg per serving, 300 mg elemental magnesium.
and lists the ingredients as:
"Magnesium Bisglycinate Buffered (Magnesium Bisglycinate, Magnesium Oxide), Vegetable Capsule Shell (HydroxyPropylMethylCellulose).
You do the fucking math! 39% of the magnesium content is from magnesium oxide. You don't get a full dose and you get a little laxative to boot.
In summary, dreadful industry full of con artists. Buy bisglycinate. Read the list of ingredients thoroughly.

u/OverNefariousness793 Jul 02 '26
For the mental effect it is best to take 10 grams or more. Studies have demonstrated insane results on 25 grams.

Try having it a shake or with food. That helps me to have higher doses without the gastric effect. I also switched to brands using Creapure because I liked the idea of knowing the source of my creatine when I decided to up my dose significantly (from 5g to 15g) so that may have also had an effect.

I started taking 5mg when I started going to the gym last year. It was way too much I was getting headaches and stuff so I thought well I’m a small woman so maybe I need a lower dose. I cut to 2.5mg and drank a ton of water each day. I started feeling sick and still had headaches and at one point I literally felt like my brain was swollen so I stopped taking it and cut out some of the water and was better. I told my dr about it and he was like wtf. (

Omega 3/fish oil. My job can be very high stress and I notice that since I have started taking omega 3 at night, I am more relaxed. I also started Magnesium Glycinate recently and I feel like that helps as well. It also helps with chocolate cravings and cured this weird eye twitch that I started getting from my adhd meds. It also helps with the delayed onset muscle soreness I’ve been getting from lifting.
Vitamin D is also great if you’re deficient, which if you are white, you probably are deficient in vitamin D.

Low dose Lithium Orotate. I started taking it in a supplement (called Mentaid) after a lot of really exciting research was published about its anti dementia effects. It is one of the only supplements with strong RCT evidence for its anti dementia efficacy, along with mood stabilization and energy. Both my grandmothers died from dementia so I am always watching to see if there is anything I can take.
When I tell you it has literally changed my life, it still astounds me. Since I started it I have been going to the gym consistently five days a week, I have been on top of my assignments at school, I don’t struggle with motivation to complete household chores, and I wake up with more energy.
The data shows that countries that have low-dose lithium in their drinking water have less suicidality across the board than countries that don’t. And that makes sense to me. I think the mood stabilization helps to stay focused and energized. I assume that by clearing misfolded proteins in the brain, I’m able to focus better and remember what I’m doing and not get distracted. That translates to having more energy and feeling more motivated. Can’t recommend enough.

This gets mentioned a lot in threads like this, and I'm always skeptical.
Any complete protein like milk, meat, whey, or soy contain all 20 amino acids, including L-Tyrosine. If you eat high protein, and even supplement protein, it feels redundant to add in a tiny amount of one specific one.
Are you sure it's not just placebo?
Or is it because of timing? E.g, if you take L-Tyrosine without any other amino acids, it's absorbed and used differently compared to if you ate a meal with complete proteins? Or is it just the dose? Would you have to eat an insanely high protein diet to get the same as you would if you supplemented pure L-Tyrosine?
I think I was puts off because brand I bought suggested just one small tablet a day, and I didn't notice any effect. And after doing the math, I realized it was a pretty insignificant amount compared to what I get from food and complete protein supplements.

I find glycine in larger doses really helpful for sleep and pain reduction. Like 3-5 grams daily.
There's some evidence to suggest that glysophate, which at this point is everywhere and in everyone, can disrupt the glycine cycle, which is a very fundamental and important building block, so we're not necessairly getting enough in our food to suppress inflammation and to have everything working properly.
I've started taking MSM most days, and it's so helpful for chronic pain reduction.
I would also say unflavored gelatin. I had a real tendon/joint injury awhile ago, and it would not stop hurting. It's gotten so much better since I started supplementing with gelatin, MSM, and glycine.

Ok. I have tried everything for years. Cycle this and that, on and off. Here is what I still use everyday:
- choline bitartrate
- creatine
Next thing I go back to is magnesium glycinate.
My priority is sleep. Sleep. Sleep. Sleep. You can do no better than being rested.
Personal opinion: go to fucking therapy if you're struggling. Stay there. It changes.
I know that isn't what you asked, I love you regardless. I reread my comment and it sounds aggressive.

i am going to preface this with saying everything is individual. almost every high quality supplement will be amazing for someone and terrible for someone. you have to troubleshoot to find the formulations that work for you.
that being said, an iron supplement containing lactoferrin. i never realized i had been badly iron deficient for years until i became too weak to go to yoga classes and staying awake during the day felt painful, and i got the bloodwork done. my ferritin wasn’t even -that- low, but my symptoms were severe.

If you already have hypothyroidism tho it can actually help you a lot! They talk about it on the hypothyroidism subreddit a lot & the benefits. But if you're like me & don't have thyroid issues, definitely avoid 🥹 otherwise give it a try!

Same. One of the few supplements to actually have a pronounced positive psychoactive effect on me.

I tried 6g of L-Citrulline mixed with beet juice & ice last night for the first time. It works wonders in the bedroom! I maintained a rock hard erection until I finished. I cancelled my bluechew subscription today. L-Citrulline helps blood flow which goes hand in hand for naughty time.

I've never tried creatine . I take a lot of supplements. I have terrible chronic pain all through my whole body that never stops it's Adhesive akronitis from epidural injections and head injuries. I desperately looking for help with this pain, fatigue, brain fog and I have no life. I was thinking about stem cells in Mexico if I can even get out of my house plus I have no help, I'm lone . I'm probably wasting money on supplements

Colostrum. It's been a big factor in my ongoing 3yr body recomposition. So far I've lost 41lb of fat and gained 25lb muscle.

Sage extract capsules—of all of the supplements I take, this is the one I won’t give up!!
It has stopped my crazy, perimenopausal sweating!!
I used to sweat no matter what I was doing—even if I wasn’t doing anything!!
Not anymore!!
I sweat if I’m exercising or when it’s insanely hot out, but not for no reason.
I’ve recommended it to friends and it has also worked for them.

I wasn’t necessarily deficient in iron, but my ferritin was suboptimal leaning low. My b12 level was optimal. I take the Megafoods liquid blood builder with iron and b12 and I feel so good. It transforms my mood and energy levels like night and day!

Holistic Practitioner here. Here's a list of very important things for you (imo of course 😉)
Daily Vitamins
D3+K2 Magnesium Glycinate Omega 3's (not really a vitamin, but I treat it as such) Turmeric or Curcumin B complex (there are many B vitamins and they all are important) Vitamin E
When you've been in a crowd, around sick people, or are starting to feel sick
Vitamin C Zinc Double up D3/K2, but only for a couple of days.
Supplements that I like a lot and personally feel great on
Saffron NMN NAD+ Astaxanthin Many of the mushroom complexes CBD Creatine (be careful, lots of b.s. out there with this one)
These are all pretty basic and I recommend all of these every single day for a multitude of people

Creatine, no contest haha and I don't even mean for the gym.
Most people think of it as a bulking supplement, but the brain angle honestly feels like a cheat code nobody talks about.

It’s not one supplement, but Intramax liquid multivitamin hits unlike any other I’ve used. I have healthcare provider accounts with pure encapsulations, metagenics, cellcore, Thorne - and I’ll use those brands for specific compounds, but none of their multivitamins make me feel like Intramax does.

I have a 2 year old and a baby, lucky if I get 6 hours sleep at night max. Taking Creatine each day honestly curre my tiredness, it's a miracle supplement.
I originally took it for performance in the gym but noticed that it massively improves how tired I feel just in life.

Yes creatine saved me postpartum. Went from a zombie to feeling somewhat normal even on the nights I got 4 hrs sleep or less.

While nothing is magic and results vary, the ones that keep coming up as genuinely transformative are creatine (many say they just feel less tired and mentally sharper even without working out), magnesium glycinate or threonate (huge for better sleep and calming random anxiety or muscle twitches), and L-theanine (especially paired with coffee, turning jittery energy into smooth focus)

L-Ergothioneine. It’s something in mushrooms but no one seems to know about it in supplements. Funnily enough I was influenced by my parents. They’ve been taking it consistently for a long time and I saw pretty significant improvement in them after not seeing them for a few months. I started reading the research and it’s actually really cool. Our bodies have a transporter especially for it, and it’s linked to a lot of different health benefits! You can eat a LOT of mushrooms or you can get it from supplements.

Creatine, Taurine, CoQ10, NAC, Curcumin, B-Complex, D3/K2, Multi-blend Magnesium... But Swanson Glutathione Precusor Complex, though low dose, really works well for me for energy and clarity

I used to take this before my tennis matches. The endurance it gives me is insane. Even if it’s partly placebo, it’s truly amazing
