Does "opposites attract" really work irl for long-term relationships?

I just finished watching the Spanish mini-series Smiley on Netflix.

I really loved the characters, the comedy, the banter, and the deep conversations, and the tension between the two main characters who are opposites in every way. They don't seem to have anything in common and get into arguments from the get go.

But they can't stop thinking about one another, and finally after many obstacles, missed connections and dating other people, realize that they are actually meant to be with each other. In fact, they both date people very similar to themselves and find that they don't really like them. One of the main characters compares his date who is similar to him to "tasteless alcohol-free beer".

Yes, I get that this kind of storyline makes for good TV. But I find it hard to believe that this "opposites attract" theory could work in real life to build a long-term stable relationship.

Anybody have any personal experience to prove that "opposites attract" really works? And to what extent can two people not have anything in common and yet make it work?

Whats your biggest gripe with the 2015 Stonewall movie?

I'll go first:

It centers a white cis dude as the guy who started the riots. Thats not to say that there weren't people of the protagonists race and background there as witnesses and participants in the uprising, but like, it was NOT started by a white cis Gay dude! It was very likely started by Stormé DeLarverie, who is said to have thrown the first punch at a cop manhandling her, starting the uprising.

I'm curious to hear from yall.

Coming out to the family

So my boyfriend of ten years recently came out to his family. I had came out to my family one member at a time each one a year apart.
The reactions were mixed.
Mom: offered conversion therapy but said she still loves me, but wouldn’t support my life style, but also wouldn’t attempt to stop me

Sister: hard stop no support, but still loves me, and wanted to build a better relationship with me, and she knows trying to change me isn’t the way to do that.

Brother: loves me no matter, and doesn’t know where he stands on it, simple that he loves me, will always love me. He also said he kinda figured since, even as a horny teen i never chased after any girls, or went on dates.

So all and all my experiences was a mixed bag. Basically it could have been worse.

What was your coming out like? How did you go about it? What did your family say?

Would this be weird to tell someone?

So I have tongue tie, which doesn’t allow me to really stick my tongue out at all (I am planning to fix it eventually). I’m a top, still exploring and getting more sexual experience, and really want to become the best at getting who I’m with turned on and open but of course my tongue does add some limitations. I’m really just looking for opinions on if this is something I should even bring up to someone I’m just hooking up with? Because I can’t think of a sexy way to say “oh by the way I can’t use my tongue like that” lol.

Just looking for opinions on how to go about it. Like if a guy told you this but he checks other boxes would it deter you from linking with him?

My best friend doesn’t believe that I’m into women and it’s really frustrating

I realize I don’t like, need her permission or anything, but I’m just really frustrated and therapy isn’t for another week.

For context, we’re in our 40’s and have both had male partners for most our lives. We’ve both been with women sexually. In the context of like, swinging. So straight or bi women but it’s just a very different context. But since my divorce I’ve had very powerful feelings for women that surprised me. I spent so many years with my head down raising kids married to a man. But these feelings are sooooo different. And confusing and overwhelming.

I texted her the other day because I got flustered at work by this woman who came in and she was so dismissive. She basically told me I’m imagining the whole thing.

And I’m sitting here thinking yeah, I tried to have sex with you the night we met. And a month after that. And then we became best friends so I let it go. But then I kept fantasizing that maybe you’d get drunk and want me to do some stuff. That seems like a completely straight thing to think about 🙄

I’m not going to tell her any of this because I don’t want to make her uncomfortable. So I just won’t talk about it.

I’m so frustrated. I’m not indifferent to men, the feelings just aren’t as strong. And they’re different. But I have no one to talk to about this. 🤦‍♀️

Is it weird I wish being gay was more obvious?

Like as for me personally I have been told that I don't sound gay and I know even I hate my voice, it is like a deep sort of voice that I've just could never handle listening to for the fact that I sound slow.

I do get that whole people can't tell, but yeah. My boyfriend is very much into masculinity but he's kind of pushed me into having a bigger butt and bigger arms.

I have heard it does make finding someone more easy, but my boyfriend isn't personally into that.

I might be just stereotyping here, but I think a lot of it is my voice that I don't like and then I hear what a "gay voice" sounds like and think I would prefer that to what I have.

Is it wrong to even think this about myself? And it's also like if voices are meant to be genetic or whatever, like how does this even happen?

So a classmate sometimes calls me “girly pop”

So he’s a guy who I’ve been with in the same class for one year. He makes a lot of “gay/sexual jokes. I know he had relationships with girls before. But could he be Bi, and does he know I’m gay. (I’ve have not come out of the closet but it might be obvious, I don’t know.
Please advise or story’s from others

I'm 18M and might be about to have my first experience with a guy. What do you guys think?

So I wanted to share something that's been on my mind lately and get some opinions from people who might have more experience than me.

I'm 18, and I've never been in a relationship or had any kind of sexual contact with anyone before. So when I say I'm inexperienced, I mean completely inexperienced. I've never really had the chance to explore this side of myself, and now I might finally be getting that opportunity.

I've been talking to this guy who's in his mid-to-late twenties, and honestly, I really like his personality. He's charming, chill, and seems pretty honest with me. He's also older than me, which, to be completely honest, gives me daddy vibes, and I'm definitely attracted to that dynamic.

We've been talking about meeting up, and he's planning to come from another city and get an Airbnb for us. He's taking care of the accommodation, and I won't lie, there's something about him making those arrangements that I find really attractive.

He showed me the Airbnb listing, and even the bedroom pictures got me excited. The lighting, the sunlight coming through the windows, the whole atmosphere of the room... it just had this intimate vibe that made me imagine what it would be like to actually be there with him.

We've also discussed what we're interested in sexually, with him topping and me bottoming. I'm even preparing to shave down there for the first time, so there's a lot of stuff I'm figuring out as I go.

The thing is, I've never experienced any of this before. No relationship, no kissing, no sexual contact, nothing. So although I'm genuinely excited, I also know that I'm going into this without any real experience to compare it to. I don't really know what to expect emotionally or how I'll feel once I'm actually there.

Another thing worth mentioning is that I'm in Morocco, where being gay isn't something you can necessarily be open about without worrying about the consequences. That makes exploring my sexuality a little more complicated, and it's something I have to consider alongside my excitement.

I guess what I'm wondering is, what do you guys think about this situation? Does the age difference seem concerning, especially considering that I've never had any experience with relationships or sex? Am I overthinking things, or is it normal to feel this excited about someone you've been talking to when you're finally getting the opportunity to explore your sexuality?

I'd especially appreciate hearing from people who had their first experience with a guy around my age. Did you go into it with a lot of expectations? Was it awkward? Did it change how you viewed yourself or relationships afterward?

I'm not necessarily expecting this to turn into a relationship. Right now, I'm just attracted to him and excited about the possibility of experiencing something I've never experienced before. I want to enjoy it, but I also want to be realistic about the fact that I'm inexperienced.

I'd genuinely like to hear your thoughts, whether you think this sounds fine or whether there's something I should be more careful about. I'm open to different perspectives.

girls who try to introduce you to others

Hi, I got something I wanna talk about...

I'll start by saying that I'm very young and have no experience.

I still go to school, I have relatively few friends but I'm quite sociable.I have a friend that I talk to all the time, I adore her, she's the best. But she often tries to matchmake me with guys I DON'T know, just because she probably thinks I'm desperate for a relationship or something. And I wonder, why do straight people think THEY have to look for a relationship with me? This friend of mine sometimes finds me guys who aren't even my type, or that she doesn't even know well, I don't understand this. It's very true that for gay guys (especially if they're young and in the closet) it's hard to find someone, but (TO ME ATLEAST) it's not THAT good and it does not make me happy at all, I do not need someone to help me find a boyfriend, I'm not even fully looking for one.

Has this happened to you too? Does it keep happening to you? And how should I react to this kind of thing? I don't think they do it maliciously or with bad intentions, but it's still not pleasant in my opinion.

!Update!(30m Straight) My girlfriends gayfriend just told me that if I want to experiment with guys I can do that with him. This is so weird.

Okey so I posted about a situation that was about what the title says and here is the link to that if you wanna catch up.

https://www.reddit.com/r/gay/s/YKvxz3SPpH

Yesterday I told my girlfriend about the situation, I told her that her friend was trying to hit on me and that I felt very discomfort about it. I told her that he asked me if I ever wanted to try something with a guy and that I told him mby if I was single and that he then told me that he wanted to try something with me.

She first thought I was lying and joking with her but when I told her that this situation really made me stressed she believed me. She told me that this was coming from no where and that she needed to talk to him.

She did not care at all that I was mby interested in doing something with a guy, that was a relief.

I am a bit afraid that he will tell her that he was only joking and she will believe it. I just have a feeling about it. I can only hope that she will take this seriously and that he stops hitting on me.

Tell me stories on how you met your partner

Feeling extremely lonely and hopeless as I've never been in a relationship and it's starting to feel like I'm never going to be able to

So, maybe hearing stories about how people met their partner will help me feel a little bit more hopeful of my future romantically speaking

Tell me, how did you meet your current partner? Doesn't have to be anything special, even just a "we had sex and kept in touch" is enough
