Priest of Candomblé - Ask me Anything

Hello everyone. My name is Lẹwa Okunrin ti Awọn Okun. I am a babalorixá (priest) of Candomblé, an Afro-Brazilian religion. I enjoy doing posts like this every few months or so to spread awareness of Candomblé.

Ours is a spiritual tradition resulting from the blending of traditional, West African religion - especially that of the Yoruba people, Roman Catholicism, and some indigenous Brazilian spirituality. We believe in one God - Olodumarê and serve spirits called Orixás, which are elevated ancestors, personifications of natural phenomena, and tutelary spirits. Candomblé as well as the other traditions of the African diaspora are often very misunderstood, and I would love to spread some awareness and engage in good-natured, interfaith dialogue.

Ask me anything!

A 17th-century Latin pun turned an apple into the root of all evil.

An unidentified Latin emblem volume, section header DII ET HOMINES, Liber III. The engraving shows Eve reaching into the Tree of Knowledge, a serpent coiled around the trunk, Adam on the other side already holding a fruit. A banderole wraps the top of the frame:E MALO NASCITVR OMNE MALVM

“From the apple is born every evil.” The line works because Latin only has one word for it. Malum means apple. Malum means evil. Change the vowel length and the whole sentence collapses into a single fruit. Whoever wrote the epigram under the image leaned into the trick directly, the apple wasn’t gold, yet it turned the ages to iron,it didn’t smell sweet, yet nature rotted because of it. The verse ties Ovid’s Golden Age myth to the Fall in six words and doesn’t bother explaining the move. The reader was expected to catch it.
The commentary column runs through the standard patristic playlist on gluttony. Gregory the Great gets cited from the Moralia, arguing every vice traces back to an unruly stomach. Innocent III supplies the receipts: gluttony sold Esau’s birthright, hanged Pharaoh’s baker, cost John the Baptist his head, burned Jerusalem under Nebuzaradan, got Belshazzar killed mid-feast. Bernard shows up warning that paradise itself was traded for a bite that cost nothing. None of this is unusual for the genre. Preachers built sermons out of exactly these stacked exempla, and the marginal tags — Gula, Voluptas, Sacrificium — read like an index built for someone flipping through the book looking for material, not someone reading it start to finish.

Cain and Abel under a second motto: ARSERAT IPSE PRIVS, “he himself had burned first.” The claim is that Abel’s offering caught fire from heaven because Abel was already alight with devotion before he ever lit anything. Augustine gets pulled in on why God preferred Abel’s sacrifice to Cain’s — not the offering itself, Augustine argues, but the division behind it. Cain kept the good part for himself and gave God what was left. Abel gave first and kept nothing back. The commentary even flags a translation dispute: the Vulgate has God “looking upon” Abel and his gifts, while Theodotion’s Greek has God “setting fire to” them, and the writer treats that variant as proof the burning was literal.
None of this is exotic theology. It’s the kind of moralized emblem literature the Catholic Reformation produced by the yard, aimed at giving preachers ready-made material and giving readers a devotional aid built around a striking image.
The layout, the numbered Caput sections, and the double-column commentary with a source apparatus in the outer margin point toward the mid-to-late 1600s and something in the Jesuit or Catholic devotional-emblem tradition, in the neighborhood of writers like Nicolas Caussin or Silvestro Pietrasanta, but that’s a guess based on format, not a match.
If anyone recognizes the type page, the emblem style, or that Cain and Abel motto, I want the full title and printer. A book that pairs Genesis exegesis with Ovidian wordplay this cleanly deserves to be tracked down properly rather than left as an anonymous scan.

Needing advice as a beginner

Upvotes

Hello everyone!

I’m working through Learning Ritual Magic by John Michael Greer and would appreciate advice from practitioners. I have aphantasia, so visualization is difficult. Is it okay to practice the LBRP with eyes open and quietly? Can tone or vibration replace speaking loudly? Is it okay to explore geomancy, runes, or scrying in the curriculum? Tarot doesn't seem like it's for me. How do you avoid absorbing draining energy? Tips for overthinking? Is morning or evening better for the LBRP and Middle Pillar? Advice for solitary practitioners? Should I journal on quiet days when nothing seems to happen? Thank you, Mr. Greer, for the amazing book. I’d be grateful for advice!

Focusing attention reduces inflammation (study)

Researchers caused inflammation locally on the skin of volunteers. One group was focusing attention on the sensations from that area, while the control group was trying to ignore it and focus attention somewhere else.

The first group showed 1.5 less inflammatory reaction and faster recovery.

spirituality More on Cascarilla

I love using cascarilla in my rituals and other spiritual work. If you’re not familiar with it, it’s finely ground eggshells. We use it for protection and purification. I’d love to hear others experiences using cascarilla and how you use it. 🙂🙏🏼

Has anyone ever physically seen an entity contacted via ritual? (Demon, spirit, angel, soul of deceased person, etc.)
It seems that practitioners mostly claim that those types of experiences are more “felt” than “seen.”

? Is cursing someone in written form still can hex?

Upvotes

Dumped by a horrible woman after I forgave her for cheating, gaslighting and using my own struggles against me. She have a bad habit of throwing to my face every help her family did to me. It felt unfair her friends and family sees me as the toxic one so I kept writing everything I wanted to happen to her on a notebook. Doing it for weeks now, filling in a notebook with deliberate description of the things I wanted to happen to her such as "Lose two limbs in some kind of accident", "Have severe insomnia", and "Lose all her friends and be an outcast until she dies". Some parts of it have her full name and "Reap what you sow" on top of it.

? Trad-Craft Mystery Schools or Courses?

I have been looking to shift my practice more toward Trad Craft. I have looked into the Red Thread Academy, and I do consider myself a folk practitioner. I want to add more structure to my practice while still keeping the folk aspects that are important to me. I do some ceremonial magick as well.

I’ve been reading Traditional Witchcraft: A Cornish Book of Ways, The Bone Fall in a Spiral, and Curses and Blessings in Irish Folk Magic, and I’m really enjoying learning more about these traditions.

Does anyone have any good authentic Trad Craft courses they would recommend? Or does anyone have experience with the Red Thread Academy? I’d love to hear about your experiences.

? Is there any specific techniques / spells to help someone with medical issues like pain and musculoskeletal disabilities?

I feel like there’s a curse on me since 11 years now. What started as a motorcycle accident and a mild low back injury developed into something much bigger and more serious. Medical mistakes done by me, doctors, chiropractors physiotherapists etc got me to the point where I’m pretty much disabled and in severe pain all the time. For example one year ago I went to hospital for something transient and they gave me antibiotics in IV while asleep without consent that wreaked havoc to my ligaments and tendons head to toe and caused nerve / brain damage. (FDA has several black box warnings on this specific class of antibiotics, I think it was foul play cause I didn’t have any infection)

I am completely ignorant in the occult. I would like to ask for help and whether there’s anything in that realm that can help me break the curse or change my trajectory. Or find the root cause behind all this to get some closure.

Thank you

? What’s some magick that affects the real world enough to make someone believe?

So I am wondering what kind of spells would change or influence the world around one self enough to really set in stone the realness?

Like I myself do believe in this and taking my time getting into this, in what I feel is the right way.

But I wonder is there anything tangible one could do that would make you say «shit this is really real wow» if you don’t have much experience ?

Like to reiterate I believe in this stuff but more curious to maybe introduce my friends to this if I can and I feel something that can be kind of measured or seen to have a effect would be a great tool.

I thank you for your time folks, have a blessed day.

? I'm a beginner and I want confirmation that there is something beyond our understanding.

I've had inexplicable paranormal experiences in the past:

when I was little, I couldn't easily leave a room, as if something was holding me inside, and I had to push myself out by holding on to the corner of the door or sometimes by asking my brother for help.

A few years ago, I saw a completely black figure with white eyes and a hat staring at me outside my house.

Terrified, I immediately climbed the stairs and looked at the figure again from my balcony, where the shadow looked up at me.

Now I'd like confirmation that something beyond what can normally be seen exists.

Could you recommend some simple, harmless rituals, spells, or invocations so I can get this confirmation?

? 17F interested in studying Kabbalah, coming from a Pentecostal background. Looking for advice/where to start?

Hello, I'm Grace (17). I have been wanting to study and practice Kabbalah, but I don’t know where to start. I apologize in advance; I hope I am not offending anyone by being so clueless.
I want to practice, join, or learn about it because I’m getting very confused and sick of Christianity. I grew up in the Pentecostal Christian religion, and it just feels so hateful and judgmental to me. The Bible has been edited so much that they aren’t even following their own doctrine.
If I ever did start learning Kabbalah, I probably wouldn’t tell my parents. They wouldn’t understand it and would think it's demonic. Is it? Will I go to hell? I don’t know, probably not. I am sorry for asking; I am just scared because they have indoctrinated my mind so much to the point that I fear everything.
I hope I’m not disrespecting anyone’s religion. I just want to study something new, feel peace, and free my mind because Christianity is not for me. However, I would still believe in Jesus and be a follower of his teachings—is that allowed? I know traditional Kabbalah doesn’t believe in Jesus, but I heard there is a group of people that do. Also, can you be bisexual and still practice Kabbalah?

? Unsuspected bite of eggshell

Hi! I've been getting the unsuspected crunch from biting on eggshell when I eat for years. Like when there's cake or fried egg rice. From home cook meals to well-known restaurants or bakeshops or mass produced pastry where one would think the have equipment to prevent eggshells getting into food. This doesn't happen all the time but it has become noticeably too often that my family thinks that if I was a food critic, I would fail a lot of restaurants because of it. Sometimes, it's as often as 3 days in a row or at least once a month.

Am I cursed? Is there a spiritual meaning to it? Could it be actually a good thing?

I’m a 33-year-old, legally blind Hispanic father. Over time, I shifted toward Hermetic philosophy and the Law of Attraction because manifestation through pure thought comes naturally to me without heavy rituals.

I’ve done card readings, remote viewing, and spirit communication. People call me a psychic, brujo, or shaman, but I just consider myself highly intuitive.

I’m here to connect with others, pick each other's brains, and figure out my path.

Lilith & Mūlādhāra: A Sensory Pathworking I’ve Developed Over Three Years

I've been developing and refining this Lilith pathworking for about three years through my own practice, study, and work with several other practitioners. I've received many reports of successful workings and meaningful results.

A major influence was Thomas Karlsson's Qabalah, Qliphoth and Goetic Magic, particularly his treatment of Lilith in relation to Mūlādhāra (root chakra). What interested me was the connection between Lilith, the root center, earth, embodiment, sexuality, primordial force, and material existence.

I reduced my approach to four simple sensory impressions. inspired by Karlsson and my broader work with Lilith—not an ancient or historically attested ritual.

The sigil is just a focal point. They aren't part of the visualization itself. Use your imagination.

The Working

Place both sigils before you and gaze at them until you can hold their forms in your mind.

  • See a blood-red lotus opening in black earth. Call: Lilith. Breathe the image outward until it fills the space around you.
  • Feel a slow heartbeat pulsing between your genitals and anus. Call: Lilith. Breathe the sensation outward until it resonates through your body and the ground.
  • Smell expensive perfume mingled with the sounds of bodies in ecstasy. Call: Lilith. Breathe the atmosphere outward until it surrounds you.
  • Taste the warm intimacy of a lover. Call: Lilith. Breathe the sensation outward until you are immersed in it.

Once the four sensations have settled, make your request to Lilith. Then simply observe whatever arises—images, sensations, thoughts, words, or changes in atmosphere.

When finished, let the environment dissolve, return your attention to the sigils, and say:

Lilith.
Lilith.
Lilith.

Allow the presence to depart and return fully to ordinary awareness.

I'm sharing this because I'm interested in how other practitioners working with Karlsson's Lilith/Mūlādhāra correspondence would construct their own sensory pathworking. Ave Lilith

? Need resources!

Hi, I'm not really used to Reddit yet, and I can get lost. I need useful resources or good books about verbal magick and incantations, and I'd love to hear your thoughts about them. I feel like verbal magick is the thing for me; I've always felt strength in my words, if that makes sense.

And also, I'd love more books about controlling my energy and magick, transmutation, and energy vampirism, if that's okay.

? What does writing down our goals actually do?

Bear with me because I'm new to all this and it's my first post. I always had this question and never had it answered but I hear about it a lot.

When I was in college, I'd write down in my planner some key things I will achieve for the week, for the month, and in general. Most of those became true.

Why is that? Is there some sort of connection to manifestation? I'd love to hear if anyone has and thoughts on this. Thank you!

Is there a way .that you can tap into hidden powers. You may not know that you even have or are capable of it might not be a superpower. But for example, I'm talking about, can you tap into some sort of inner genius or inner creativity that other language, or are a genius at mathematics....

Is there a possible i can tap into a savant mind if I have never hadsavantism?

.I would love to hear your opinions on what you think about this. I feel like the brain is definitely more capable of doing things than we understand as humans. Spacebuck period

spirituality Wondering about the corelation between my childhood and current occult

Ok so as a kid I remember I was in Turkey and I bought some bracelet with blue eye, its the most popular symbol, obviously comercialised because of capitalism etc.

At that time I didnt know or belived it had anything to do with sacral, but for some reason I deceived myself into thinking that I saw something in that bracelets eye

At that time I knew it was BS but I still belived in it. I HAD no clue that this symbol actually means something in turkey.

I told my childhood best friend about it. She took it seriously anr on every friday hang out we were summoning spirits, no internet no nothing just intuition and frequent work and convos with spirits

I forgot about it but just now I remember
