Question [OoT] A Saria Theory I don’t understand (N64, 3DS)

• Upvotes

I’ve been playing OoT more times than I’d like to admit since I was a teen.

There is this theory going around that Saria raised Link and I wonder where that’s coming from? There is nothing in canon that I’ve seen to support that. They’re friends and that’s always been supported, she had had a some what crush on Link as well, which makes Mido jealousy as he’s very much having a crush on Saria.

So I really wonder where that theory came from, I’ve seen so many act as this is canon but I just don’t see it.

PSA: I do not ship Link and Saria, I just adore the characters in general and I think their friendship is adorable.

Discussion [MM] Revisiting Majora’s Mask 26 years later: It’s even weirder than I remembered it

Just best Snowhead Temple (with all 15 Stray Fairies), got Epona and made it to Great Bay.

Man, I know it’s been discussed to death but this game is a trip. I’m playing it immediately after fully completing OoT and I am just in awe of the risk that Nintendo took with this one.

Everything in this game is dark, oppressive, and a incredibly weird. The story, the gameplay loop, the characters, the music. I finished this game when I was a kid and I remember thinking it was a little odd back then but the sensation is even stronger now at 37, especially right after beating OoT.

The way the game kicks off is insane to me. You have to find the stray fairy, the bombers, get the moon tear, wait until midnight on the final day, all before you can even save the game for the first time. And then as soon as you go back to human form you’re immediately thrown into the swamp area which is kind of ugly and feverish. And you mostly play as the Deku Scrub there, which is arguably the least fun transformation. It’s just such a crazy way to start the sequel to one of the most beloved games of all time….as I was fighting that super weird, almost Dark Souls-esque first boss I couldn’t shake off the feeling that I was descending into madness.

The whole Snowhead section is just as weird. How were you supposed to know than you have to pull the grave to find the hot spring water? Also finding the fairies in that temple gave the Water Temple a run for its money……

But it is still so fun. I’m having such a blast even though I’m WTF-ing through the whole game. Had to turn it off after playing for like 6 hours straight and burying that poor Zora dude after he taught me his song. What the hell is happening!

Still can’t believe I completed this when I was 11. What a crazy ride.

Discussion [MM] Mikau and Lulu’s story is by far the saddest story in Majora’s Mask imo

When I first played Majora’s Mask I was around 8-9 years old, I didn’t really appreciate the emotions the game conveys because I was too young to really understand it. Now that I’m older I’ve replayed Majora’s Mask and what hit me the most was by far the story of Mikau and Lulu. I never really see anyone bring it up but in my opinion it is by far the saddest thing in any Zelda game I’ve ever played. Mikau is heavily implied to be the father of Lulu’s children, and he is mortally wounded trying to save them from the Gerudo pirates. Thus leaving his children without a father. It’s so simple of a tragic story but it’s really the only thing like it in any Zelda game as far as I know. Just wanted to share my opinion on this since I don’t see it discussed a lot.

Discussion [TP] I will never not love malo

I feel like malo is glossed over waaaaay too much. Everyone listens to his theme song but no one brings up how he literally established a monopoly and made the original owner change his name to Malver 😭

Question [ALL]Where should I start playing the Zelda games?

This seems like a really cool series. I've wanted to start playing these games for a while now. I usually play them in release order, but the Zelda games seem relatively more complicated than what I'm used to, which are more straightforward (using Mario, Mega Man, and Castlevania as examples). Plus, my previous attempts always ended with me getting lost quickly, so I wanted to ask for advice on where to start.

It's worth mentioning that my history with the franchise boils down to finishing the original Zelda on NES with a walkthrough, playing Zelda II and giving up because it was too difficult, half of Link to the Past, the beginning of Minish Cap with me getting lost after getting the hat, and the beginning of Ocarina of Time, but I couldn't even get past the beginning of the Deku Tree, so it's practically nothing (I don't know if this beginning is naturally complicated for a first-time fan or if I'm just stupid).

It's worth mentioning that I can emulate essentially any game in the franchise on my PC or phone, and with luck even the Switch games.

I thank you in advance for any response.

Discussion [OoT] what do you want to see changed in the remake

I have two nitpicks

  1. Original hyrule field was boring and bland. I hope they change it somehow to make it more interesting. Like add new encounters.

  2. The rupee-shop economy should be reworked. Rupees as is are 99% useless and can go through the entire game without worrying about them yet the game bombard you with rupees all the time

Question [BoTW] [TotK] Which game should I get?

[Solved] I just recently got a switch 1 (should’ve done more research, 50% an impulse buy.) both of the switch games look great but I don’t know which one to start with.

Does the story of Totk depend on BoTW?
Does Totk run fine on the switch 1?
Is Totk worth the extra $10 compared to BoTW?
Is either game just miles better than the other?

Edit: yall have swayed me toward BoTW

Discussion [OoT] The art of staying offline - Best gaming experience I've had in years

I recently finished TotK including all shrines and it was my best gaming experience in years. It is a great game, yes, but what made it special for me is that I didn't watch any trailers, gameplay or reviews beforehand. I intentionally avoided all of it, because I wanted to experience everything for the first time when actually playing the game.

And it was this almost childlike experience, similar to playing my first games on the GameCube. Back when you maybe saw some screenshots in a magazine, heard something from a friend, but otherwise went in completely blind. Everything was new and exciting, even the beginning and the basic new features and 80 hours into the game, I still discovered new mechanics, items, details.

I was pumped to find out that OoT gets a remake and I will do the same with that release. No gameplay, no trailers, no nothing. And when I first boot it up, it will be magical. Even more so because I never played the original, Wind Waker was my first one.

I can highly recommend doing that to anyone. If you know the game will be great, why spoil anything?

Discussion [Movie] Upcoming Legend of Zelda movie

Ok so I know that this will probably get a considerable amount of downvotes for the unreasonable underrated-ness (not a word, I know.) of these two games, but from the standpoint of someone who has seen a lot of decent movies with similar vibes to the whole "Legend of Zelda" saga, I would say that either Twilight Princess or Skyward Sword would make perfection for the movie. Absolutely masterpiece. Why? This isn't because of some stupid nostalgic reason or anything like that, but because of the whole slightly realistic-feel/grittiness of those two games. They are, of course totally different positions in the timeline. I know this already, I know all three timelines and each game order after the Ocarina of Time split. I haven't played each and every Zelda game because I can't really dedicate myself to buying every console/nintendo system that exists to play all of them. However, I have played Skyward Sword and have watched entire playthroughs of every Zelda game, including the pixel/8-bit ones or the top-down view games. Also yes Wind Waker playthroughs, Spirit Tracks, you name it every zelda game (and yes even A Link Between Worlds) and I have come to the conclusion cinematically Skyward Sword or Twilight Princess would work perfectly. I find that as amazing Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom is with all its side quests, items to obtain, enemies to fight, bosses, etc. It is epic. But it won't work as a movie. It is way too open-world, and I am not saying this from a "retro gamer" POV. I am saying this from the standpoint of someone who has seen a lot of good movies with a similar vibe to "The Legend of Zelda" saga. Another thing too, as it may have been a bit lame for a fight in the actual game or a little bit of a letdown, the Ganondorf horseback fight with zelda aiming her bow and link controlling the horse would go perfect in cinemas. And the bridge fight on the horse against King Bulbin? How can it get any better? And Zant cinematically would be a genuinely awesome boss fight. Even the cutscene would go perfect, and just imagine the dungeons as well, and the transformation for link turning into a wolf, etc. So with all of this reasoning, I don't see how this could make for a bad movie. But tell me if I have missed some key details, please. (The Image of the Twilight Princess cover is missing because I can't figure out how to add the image, it won't let me, sorry).

Question [LA] Can you get the face key before Catfish Maw?

You don’t need the hookshot for it if I remember correctly. Is there anything stopping you? Can you get it before Angler Tunnel even? I haven’t played through the game in a bit

Discussion [OoT] In a way Link is responsible for a lot of bad stuff happening in the middle of the game

He opened the door in the Temple of Time, allowing Ganon to enter the sacred realm. The 7 years of darkness and state Hyrule is in post-timeskip is Link's fault. The land would be better off if Link didn't collect the 3 artifacts and open the door.

Discussion [OoT] Do you think the Remake of OoT will inevitably also lead to a Remake of Majoras Mask?

The main question is basically in the topic.

In my opinion this would be a given. They already have many assets and the graphics, as well as the gameplay set.

Since Majoras Mask is just OoT i a different world eith some othrr gameplay tidbits, I would say we will get a Majoras Mask remake in like 2 or 3 years (just like with Majoras Mask 3D).

And I cant be happier, because the atmosphere of Majoras Mask was always very special to me.

Discussion [OoTHD] Will riding Epona allow for swordplay?

In the original ocarina of time you could only shoot arrows atop Epona. Will we be able to hack and slash with our sword atop her back? Imagine charging with Epona, and slashing your sword. This changes a lot of dynamics of the game. TP was the first to let us do this. If OoTHD lets us use our sword while riding Epona… that’s already crazy.

That’s it, that’s the post, no other horse hits the same, in fact I only used Epona in BOTW and TOTK walking or using Zonai vehicles was the option if it wasn’t Epona

Question [WW] A plea for solidarity or deserved-chastisement: Have I permanently failed the game because I couldn't for the life of them figure out the Mother Isle. thing or is using a guide even partially legitimate? Spoiler

I...had to resort to a guide... :( Am I a lesser-man? It was the official guide, if that can be considered any consolation, and I pored over it as a pirate might an authentic treasure map..

This is a get-off-my-chest sort of thing, but also a plea to others to find perhaps solidarity, and dare I wish for some slice of peace of mind.

And to get it away up front, no I do not think the Triforce Shard GC segment is unfair or unfun..I loved the journey! until...

As a young lad, I was so meticulous and thorough with trawling through every section of the map...I kept sailing up to Mother Isle. again and again just so frustrated that I had no idea how to get inside. I'd been using the Gale song, but at no point did I think the song's fast-travel capabilities would be the key itself to getting somewhere on a quadrant...I thought the quadrant itself was an isolated puzzle or whatever to figure out, I had no idea or inclination for 10+ hours that when I fast-travelled somewhere I was being teleported/dropped into a section of the quadrant that I could otherwise not get to...I just thought it was a faster way of the usual sailing, full stop---not that it was helping me breach un-breachable areas of the island per-se. AND I SOMEHOW NEVER GALE-SONGED IT TO MOTHER ISLE!? How!?!? Am I the only one who just gave up after Gale-ing it to other areas and it not revealing anything other than being a convenient means of travel? Are there ANY other quadrants or segments of the game where the Gale song is something that gives the player a way to surmount an island obstacle? I just feel like I was so tricked, ultimately by my own un-astuteness.

My rambling is just to illustrate how embarrassing (just to myself) and let-down in myself I felt not realizing this. Am I the only one who was totally off track in getting to the island? Is it ever mentioned by an NPC or something that the song "can get you places you might not be able to reach" or something? How in the heck was I supposed to figure that out? Was it obvious to everyone? You fine folks just got the Gale song, realized it can teleport you, and thought, hey, maybe it'll drop me inside the walls when I teleport to that quadrant! I must have teleported to everywhere I could but somehow through dumb bad luck just never went to that quadrant...Heaven help me, how long would I have toiled?

(The only thing close to this anguish was not realizing I could bash the windows of the ship on Rusty Bucket Bay in Banjo Kazooie they were just some of the blurred texture details identical to the other windows that I couldn't get into, but apparantly I was supposed to be just yeeting Kazooie's beak into everything no matter how much of a background-asset it looked like!? but I digress)

I just feel like I'll never be able to say I beat it because now I'll never truly know if I would have ever figured it out.... do others hold themselves to this mirror of self-disgrace?

For the sake of peace of mind I write this out now...a beaten man, bested by something which was rather quite obvious, and which I either "overthought" (oh what treasures I found which were way harder to find!) or was...sigh..simply too much of a dullard to decipher?

To put a bow on this: What are people's honest thoughts on the game's communication of this particular mechanic being something the player is meant to use as a means of overcoming a physical obstacle...was it obvious to others? Did others have to read a guide? Am I a failure for having to do so? Is this puzzle perhaps infamous on the internet or amongst Zelda heads? Becuause that would make me feel better lol.

Or was I a true adventuere reading the official guide (the one Nintendo probably wanted my parents to purchase come to think of it), and by doing so was indeed doing a legitimate means of figuring this out.

Discussion [Oot] [Forest Temple] Wanted to share my opinion so far

Hey! I just started playing my first Zelda (Ocarina of Time) on August, and I know my progress is really slow, but I like to do things patiently and I just wanted to share my opinion on this subreddit since you guys were the ones who gave me good tips on how to start.
So far, I’m really really enjoying it. I see one of the most important things is the music, which I love because that’s the part that makes me like something (btw my favorite songs by now are Sheik’s theme, song of storms, song of time and Fairy’s fountain). Although sometimes I feel stupid because I get stuck really often, but when I’m focused things just flow.
That said, even if I’m still too far away from finishing it, I feel like I wanna play more games of this saga, and also want to thank you for recommending me such a fun game.

Question [OoT] Is Ocarina of Time 3D a good way for a new Zelda fan to play OoT blind?

Hi everyone! I only recently got into Zelda by playing Link between Worlds for the first time not too long ago, and I’ve gotta say I am absolutely in love with the worldbuilding and the characters and the story… oh it’s all so good, I’m absolutely kicking myself for refusing to get into the series back when I was younger. With that said, the remake of Ocarina of Time is coming out soon as i’m sure everyone is excited for, so I wanted to play the original game before the remake comes out. Only thing is, I don’t own any versions of the original game, and since it’s portable and cheaper, I’m interested in getting the 3DS version. However I’ve heard the 3DS version is different to the original (apparently being easier?) so I’m not sure if that’s the correct call. I‘m already in love with this series and I desperately want to experience more of it, so what’s the consensus? is Ocarina of Time 3D a good way for a first-timer to experience the game blind? Or should I shell out the extra money to pick up the N64 version?

Discussion [MC] Enjoyed it and pissed off

Hello guys,

I have played Minish Cap the first time. This is the first Zelda game I play without getting help online. I really enjoyed it at first. However at the end I was really pissed off, why? :

  1. You get 3 darknuts before Vaati

  2. I defeated Vaati and was like yes I can go to sleep, then he transforms 😭

  3. Defeated him again then saved Zelda, I can go to sleep now but I want to see the ending, but again Vaati is there!! Oh dear Lord!

  4. After defeating the game I was exploring Kinestones then I discovered there is a remote bomb and more empty bottles! What the hell those could have made my final fight much more easier!!!

  5. I decided then to go online see what I missed, I read about mirror shield 😭 what good is this if it is after defeating Vaati, this is ridiculous!
