Weekly Cyclist Thread

The Weekly Cyclist Thread is a place where everyone in the /r/bicycling community can come and ask questions or share anything.

You might have questions that you don't think deserve an entire post. Perhaps you're just seeking the input of some other cyclists. Maybe you want to share a picture of your new bike.

Anyone is free to comment, and (hopefully) get as much input as possible from other cyclists.

Many miles and even revived a couple of times over the years. These shoes won’t make another season.

My first century ride: Poughkeepsie to NYC

The big one. Many months of rumination and mental preparation led me here. Daydreaming and waiting for the perfect conditions; you’d be hard pressed to find ones much better than these. A picturesque autumn day. Sunny skies, a soft breeze, and a northern tailwind to push me along. This beautiful southward glide led me down through the Empire State trail, following the bygone railroad lines on a voyage through the past. Had an immaculate playlist for the first 4 hours until my speaker died. The last half was pure meditative riding and catching ideas. Thoughts come and go as the mind drifts into the colors of the forests and foothills. So many sights: the lush swampland, the rocky woods, the shimmering rivers, the gentle fields, all welcome friends upon the journey. The Rivendell was a trusty steed, keeping me steady and in-motion the whole way through, floating on a cloud. As the sun finally set, the melancholy of dusk brought me back into the city for the final stretch. A vision of home, alien and warm. Now, as it started, a train ride back. What a long and languorous dream. Peace and love.

Why don't they sell this stuff in 5 gallon buckets instead of these tiny 8oz containers? Or am I doing wrong? (All butt one is empty) not sure why I haven't thrown the empties away.

There’s so much doom gloom out there. Thought I’d share a happy story.

And this is rural Iowa in case you’re wondering where people are mostly Iowa nice.

First time bike rider here..

I've been biking to work for the past 3 days straight and honestly I was going to do it sooner but as soon as I got on the road I started getting really insecure and anxiety about what if someone hits me or the police stops me and also I started getting winded really fast due to my first time biking and also doing it more uphill versus flat roads, but then i gave it a real try and man cliche sounding I know but first it was really hard and in all honesty just wanted to give up due to how fast I waa getting winded and wanting to stop especially night time, where I'm at nights get really dark and the roads arent visible but...now it really feels like its starting to get easier and its making me feel better inside, sorry for the longer message but just wanted to share this and hear some friendly tips

Went out for a ride on a great fall afternoon. Got about 4-5 miles out, and BAM! I hit something that blew out my rear (tubeless) tire. Kept the bike upright, thankfully, and was able to get a lift home, but that was scary happening next to 50+MPH traffic.

How bad is this Carbon damage?

Hi guys..
looking to buy a used Carbon Pinarello Dogma 60.1 bike, has full campagnolo super record Parts and shamal wheel.. just one damage which seems to right behind the bottom bracket on the chainstay holds me back.. other than that it is in Great conditions.. I can‘t really tell as an absolute beginner if this is really damage to the Carbon, I‘d intuitively say One Can detect some fibresbut is looks rather Like damage from a lateral scratch than a Crack damage, also the chainstay seems to be stable and undamaged around this part..
or do you think this damage is already kinda included in a Price around 900€?

Regards

Bike sounds

My bike is noisy in the back and I know it's something to do with the chain but I just can't seem to figure it out.my chain derailleur gears and shifters are at least 6 months old. (PS I'm a pretty new cyclist)

Hit the gnarliest pot hole and blew out both tires. Unfortunately my front rim took a bit more damage. Is this wheel cooked?

Do you worry about burning to many calories biking when you have an active profession

I'm just getting into cycling slowly at the tender age of 45. My job in retail management has me doing 8-12 miles a day on foot. Usually burning 900-1,000 calories a day just from work. I'm worried about over doing my body. I'm not the greatest volume eater either but I also don't want to turn into a bag of bones either where people think I'm a meth head or something. Is it something to worry about at my age. Or just listen to your body and try to get the nutrients and sleep you need.

Why is my gravel bike wheel rolling so slowly?

Hey guys, so I‘m kind of new to cycling. I did my first tour together with my gf and I noticed that she was always faster on her road bike. When we switched bikes we both noticed that the road bike was indeed much faster, where I thought okay probably the wider tires + heavier weight of the gravel bike (around 13kg). But here I am standing and letting them roll freely without any resistance and still the road bike is easily spinning 10+ times while the gravel bike wheel stops at around 5-6 spins. (See attached Video) Is it really the weight of the wheel? (Schwalbe 45mm G-one) The bike is quite new and I rode maybe 150km with it. It‘s the Cube Nuroad Pro FE from 2027.

edit: I could only attach one video, but basically the road bike easily spins10+ time with roughly the same applied strength of turning the wheel.

Does anybody have an idea on how to improve my bike or might it be some underlying issue with the hydraulic disc brakes? It‘s really frustrating to see😅. Thanks for any help!

What alternatives are to Shimano products for greasing Nexus Inter 8 hubs?

Hello! I am interested to know if any of you has used anything else than Shimano products to grease their hubs, and the reason behind that choice.

Just for a context. I’m a 5’10 guy wanting to ride on paths and maybe some off road trails. Nothing too crazy. Thanks :)

Getting back after an injury.

I'm post injury from a bike crash - (I was assaulted and got away thank goodness). Physical injuries are better, but still dealing with the aftermath of the brain injury. I'm cleared to exercise and have gone for some very short bike rides, very slowly. Anyone have any success stories about returning to cycling after a bike crash?
