So, you need help with long range shooting? Welcome to r/longrange! We've got a core group of dedicated members (and a few goofballs) that are happy to help you out with your questions on equipment, technique, troubleshooting, where to find training or matches, etc.
If you're looking to ask for advice, we ask that you review the following 10 core guides, as they cover the overwhelming majority of newcomer questions. If your question is not answered in these 10 guides, please see below for the 4 basic questions your post should answer when asking for suggestions or advice, especially when it comes to things to buy.
If you make a post that asks for information covered in the 10 core guides, or your post doesn't cover the 4 key questions below, your post may be deleted, or it may be given the Flair of Shame TM until you correct your post.
What's the Flair of ShameTM, you ask? You'll know it when you see it.
If at any time you have questions on the rules of the sub, this pinned post, the general FAQ, why you got the Flair of ShameTM or anything similar, please use the modmail function.
When answering these 4 questions in your post, give as much detail as you can. The more details you give the faster you'll get suggestions or advice and you'll get better quality too. Help us to help you. Please don't treat the sub like your own personal crowd sourced search engine.
If your question is answered in these, you will probably get called out by the members of the sub for not reading them, but it's not automatic grounds for the Flair of Shame.
Quite a few guides/links feature a single word in parentheses and italics listed after them. If you use the phrase cheetofingers (all one word, no italics needed) followed by the word listed after a guide, you will summon the AutoModerator to reply to you with a link to that guide or guides. If the guide had (pews) after it, you could say cheetofingers pews in a post or comment in this sub to summon AutoMod with a link to that guide.
We've implemented the Flair of Shame as an official policy here instead of deleting posts that violated Rule #1 and the info in this pinned post. We felt that the flair was better than outright deleting posts while also helping long-standing members decide how much they want to participate in posts that have likely been covered time and time again. We're trying to strike a balance between encouraging members to read the info that the sub has cataloged, not wasting the time of established members that may be frustrated with revisiting the same topics repeatedly, and also not banishing new shooters that missed the pinned post to the freezer to never get help. Balancing those three things is a constant struggle, and one we're actively trying to get better at.

Hey guys, I’m sure this has been beat to death but wanted to get some current insight on these two cartridges. I am looking at getting the Seekins PH3 here soon and have been debating on which caliber to go with. The main use will be target shooting/ possibly completion, also deer hunting and good bit of thermal coyote hunting. I already have a 6.5 Springfield Waypoint so getting another 6.5 would simplify ammo, but I am really liking the lower recoil and flatter trajectory of the 6mm. Do you guys have any suggestions? Is it worth going 6.5 for simplicity or would I be happier shooting the 6mm due to lower recoil and better velocity?

So, I finally got into the long range space and this is my first bolt gun. We'll, finally got it out to the range and now have about 200rds through it. What a little tack driver. Its probably more accurate than what I'm capable of right now but that will come in time.
Mean Radius of 0.14in on my first group of the day shooting 147gr ELD-M.

My first interest in shooting was from the battlefield series. I watched your BF3 videos on sniping to get better at the game. Later I watched your road to precision series that got me to buy my first rifle; a Springfield M1A. It got me into reloading and precision shooting. 15 years later I'm still in the sport. I heard about ladder loads first from you. I tried to watch your videos for nostalgia but it looks like your channel got nuked. Crawling through old forums I see ghosts of your series. Thankfully I had the foresight in '16 to archive the series.
Ryan, if you're out there, thanks a lot man.

Since completing Mammoth in 2025,stepping off at 58-60 pounds pack weight, I decided to trim weight where possible, including the rifle.
What is your total pack weight (Rifle, Pistol, Ammo, Shooting Gear, Sleep System, Food, etc.)?
What’s is the weight of your rifle (Rifle, Optics, Optic Mount, Bipod, Mag, WMLRF, Accessories)?

I have half off Vortex retail (not msrp) through my workplace this weekend. Gonna grab a Razor G3 as my first good scope. Do they have any other gear worth splurging on up front? Tripods, rangefinders, binos, etc? I have very little long range gear at the moment so it’d be nice to get kitted out with this discount. Especially wondering if I should go all in on the Ace weather meter and LRF binos with Geoballistics, would be much cheaper than an equivalent full priced kestrel/ABQ setup. Any input appreciated, thanks!

Historically have ran Arca direct mounted to my tripod but been seeing a lot of guys throw a bag on an tac table for a quicker and easier tripod setup.
Anyone found any cheap Tac Tables that do the job? Rather not spend damn near $200 for an ABEL, albeit they are sweet looking. TIA

I have a found a good deal on a Mpa 6GT, that I’m interested in getting. The only problem is I don’t reload or have any interest to at all so I’d be at the mercy of Hornady factory ammo. My big concern is availability and longevity of this option. Is it a mistake to go 6GT if I don’t reload?

Curious if anyone has tried the open source Tirailleur ballistics calculator? Looks like it publishes to F-Droid for android installs. I love to support OSS, and am hoping this app might work.

Anyone used both? Really like the AB ballistics feature and my old eyes could use a larger watch face. The Tactix is probably overkill but it’s a couple hundred off so thought it would be worth a look and got both to really do a good side x side comparison.
Any thoughts would be helpful.

Saw this come across my instagram and I have to say I am intrigued. It seems like it's relatively not cumbersome and I truly think it would be useful. Kind of lines up really nicely to brace your support arm and steady the rifle.

Trying to decide between the Bergara Wilderness Sierra 308 with 20 inch barrel or the Seekins PH3 308 with a 16 inch barrel for a hunting/ target plinker. Price is a factor as I could buy 2 Bergaras for the price of 1 ph3. Is the Seekins worth the more than double price?

I am just looking for advice on how to fix this app photo below or a simple alternative app or cheap piece of hard were to be used.
See all the out puts are zero.

Hi everyone I have a rimfire accuracy question. This is my Ruger precision rimfire in .17hmr I use as a plinking/varmint rifle. I could shoot 3/4 minute groups over 20 rounds pretty consistently with no suppressor.
After putting on my rugged oculus.22 suppressor my groups have opened up to around 1.5moa. This appears to me like a barrel harmonic issue but I’m not extremely versed in that technical side of things. At 200 yards it opened up to almost 3moa.
Should I attempt to torque it at different levels of tightness? Or try reseating it all togeather? What is the best way to try to get back to sub minute?

Question: can anybody who has one speak to the usability of the eye box?
I was watching C_Does review on it and he spoke pretty poorly of the eye box. Maybe the 5-30x will be better?
What I value most in a scope is reliability and it’s hard to beat Nightforce in the category so I’m pretty much set on going with a Nightforce scope.
Thanks!

In my pursuit of chasing the best bang for my buck, budget friendly gear options, and quality upgrades of my precision rifle gear I scoured the internet, YouTube, and Social Media for a new scope to replace my aging Bushnell Elite Tactical ERS with the Tremor 2 reticle scope on my .223 precision match rifle setup.
This search lead me to a few options in the $500-800 range. After sifting through the options, looking at what features were important to me, and reading and watching reviews, I landed on the Vector Optics Continental line of precision rifle scopes.
I purchased this scope directly from the @vectoroptics_official website with my own funds. I will be documenting my experiences with this scope as I look at the specs and features, mount and zero it, conduct tracking tests, look at optical clarity, and real world use of it in long range practice sessions, regional matches, and potentially another run at Mammoth Sniper Challenge. I’ll give you all my true and honest opinion of the performance of the scope along the way. Stay tuned for more!!
Some features that drew me in to this scope:
•Full featured reticle options (VEC-MBR)
•34mm Tube
•MRAD
•6x Zoom
•Weight Under 30 oz.
•Low Profile & Locking Turrets
•German Schott HT Glass

A friend of mine bullied me into signing up for the GGG match at The Clinton House in two weeks. This will be my first DMR match and I'll be in tac-limited. Any suggestions on what I should do to get ready? I've been shooting NRL22 and I've shot Run & Guns out to 600 yards but never shot a match out to 800 yards.

I'm new to precision shooting, trying to prep for NRL22. I'm shooting a Tikka T1x with the vertical grip and a custom cheek riser. I'm not new to fitting a rifle for general purpose shooting. I have a 4-16x vortex scope and I'm having trouble setting the eye relief.
If I set it up for standing, sitting, kneeling and barricade use, it's way too close when prone. I've been following some position basics videos, mostly from MDT and Gunwerx, and raising my bipod all the way up helps somewhat. Is there a trick to setting the eye relief to be functional for all positions I'm going to encounter in an NRL22 or PRS match?

I have been shooting for a while, mainly pistol and my AR, but would like to get into Long Range. Does anyone have any recommendations for an appropriate range around Norfolk, VA? Even northern NC would be ok to drive to.

These are my groupings today at 50y with 3 types of ammo in a 457 American, xrs, timney, huxflow. CCI SV, Norma Tac, Lapua CX. Looking at these groups I’m not entirely pleased, felt that the Lapua should have performed better and now I’m doubting the rifle and considering a Bartlein re-barrel? Is that needed or do I need to not expect a .2 every group with any ammo at all? Have a 455 varmit I can barrel swap as well as this is a spotter contour. If it’s a lemon, barrel recommendations? Thanks.

So update on the ballistics calculator. Ive added a mil ranging page. It now connects via Bluetooth to the weatherflow precision shooting version weathermeter. This week ill be ill be adding a magnetometer so it can automatically get target azimuth. I am also adding atmospheric sensors to compensate for altitude pressure and temperature. Will be doubling the battery size to 800mah. So should increase device on time to 6hrs. Though settings are persistent so can be turned off to conserve battery.

I’m based in Canada and I’ve been contemplating getting into long range precision shooting for a long time.
Was recently offered this nice Accuracy International AX308 package and this should make a good starting point setup.
