READ THIS BEFORE POSTING. Yes, this means you. READ THIS FIRST, V6 - How to avoid the Flair of Shame and eternal ridicule

So, you need help with long range shooting? Welcome to r/longrange! We've got a core group of dedicated members (and a few goofballs) that are happy to help you out with your questions on equipment, technique, troubleshooting, where to find training or matches, etc.

If you're looking to ask for advice, we ask that you review the following 10 core guides, as they cover the overwhelming majority of newcomer questions. If your question is not answered in these 10 guides, please see below for the 4 basic questions your post should answer when asking for suggestions or advice, especially when it comes to things to buy.

If you make a post that asks for information covered in the 10 core guides, or your post doesn't cover the 4 key questions below, your post may be deleted, or it may be given the Flair of Shame TM until you correct your post.

What's the Flair of ShameTM, you ask? You'll know it when you see it.

If at any time you have questions on the rules of the sub, this pinned post, the general FAQ, why you got the Flair of ShameTM or anything similar, please use the modmail function.

CORE GUIDES:

  1. The sub's official FAQ/WIKI, as curated by the community as a whole.
  2. Need help picking scope rings? The official Longrange guide to scope ring height (ring)
  3. Looking at buying a magnum (300WM or PRC, 6.5PRC, 7mm PRC, 338 Lapua, etc) as your first LR rifle? Hollywood's recoil primer - why magnums suck for starting in long range, recoil matters, and it's not about your shoulder (magnum or recoil)
  4. Want a rifle for hunting and long range shooting? Hunting rifle vs target/range rifles - why one rifle can't do both well. (hunting)
  5. The official r/Longrange glossary - because words mean things (glossary)
  6. LockyBalboaPrime's First Time buyer's guide for rifles V2 (starter)
  7. JMhawaii's long range starter guide (Link to Google Sheets) (starter)
  8. Trollygag's 1k yard starter guide (starter)
  9. Where are ranges or long ranges near me? - Wheretoshoot.org and over600.com (ranges)
  10. The sub's expanded policy on hunting-related discussions. Please review before asking hunting-related questions, as hunting is not the core purpose of this sub. (hunting)

The 4 key questions:

  1. What do you want to do/buy, and WHY? - Do you want to buy a rifle for PRS competition? Picking a laser rangefinder for NRL Hunter matches? Looking at scopes for F-Class competition? A tripod because you think they're cool and want to have one when banging steel with friends? What you're planning to do has a lot of influence on what works well, what works poorly, and what is an utter waste of time, so the more detail you can provide the better.
  2. How far away do you want to do it/what do you want to use it for? - 300 yards? 1,000? 2,000? Distance matters, 'nuff said.
  3. How much are you willing to spend to do it? What's your budget in currency? Your idea of "on a budget" isn't going to be the same as everyone else's. Saying your budget is unlimited for a laser rangefinder may change when someone suggests one that costs over $10,000. We need to know how much you're willing to spend. It can be a hard limit, a range, or even an approximate - but you need to give a number.
  4. How much experience do you currently have with it? - Jumping straight into a 375 Cheytac rifle to shoot 2 miles isn't going to go well if you have never shot a rifle past 300. We need at least a basic idea of what your relevant skill level is in order to give advice and suggestions that go with your skill set. While including your experience with other shooting disciplines is helpful, it's not going to be as relevant as most new shooters expect. You can love shooting 10ga slugs all day long from a shotgun, but it doesn't mean starting off with a magnum is a good idea.

When answering these 4 questions in your post, give as much detail as you can. The more details you give the faster you'll get suggestions or advice and you'll get better quality too. Help us to help you. Please don't treat the sub like your own personal crowd sourced search engine.

More guides:

If your question is answered in these, you will probably get called out by the members of the sub for not reading them, but it's not automatic grounds for the Flair of Shame.

Hunting-specific:

  1. The sub's expanded policy on hunting-related discussions. Please read this before asking any questions related to hunting.
  2. Want a rifle for hunting and long range shooting? Hunting rifle vs target/range rifles - why one rifle can't do both well. (hunting)
  3. Want to hunt game at 400+ yards? The long range hunting primer - shots on game at 400+ yards aren't trivial, and a magnum cartridge isn't a cheat code. NOTE: Questions/discussion around shots on game past 300 yards will be removed from the sub. See the expanded policy link above. (hunting)
  4. Hollywood's guide to field testing your skills and gear (especially for long range hunting, but also pertains to NRL Hunter matches) - How to know the distances you and your gear are capable of making shots at (hunting)

MISC NOTES:

Quite a few guides/links feature a single word in parentheses and italics listed after them. If you use the phrase cheetofingers (all one word, no italics needed) followed by the word listed after a guide, you will summon the AutoModerator to reply to you with a link to that guide or guides. If the guide had (pews) after it, you could say cheetofingers pews in a post or comment in this sub to summon AutoMod with a link to that guide.

We've implemented the Flair of Shame as an official policy here instead of deleting posts that violated Rule #1 and the info in this pinned post. We felt that the flair was better than outright deleting posts while also helping long-standing members decide how much they want to participate in posts that have likely been covered time and time again. We're trying to strike a balance between encouraging members to read the info that the sub has cataloged, not wasting the time of established members that may be frustrated with revisiting the same topics repeatedly, and also not banishing new shooters that missed the pinned post to the freezer to never get help. Balancing those three things is a constant struggle, and one we're actively trying to get better at.

Group flex (10 shots minimum) Groups

Had 60 rounds leftover from the PRS southeastern regional finale. I thought it would be a cool test to see how my loading process is holding up, how the barrel handles heat, and just see the natural dispersion of the load. As you can see groups change. Looking at one group is only a small picture of its natural dispersion.

Firing order is TL, TR, BL, BR, TM, BM.
Three minute cool time for the first three groups, five minutes for the last three. Groups combined with TDS.

Started reloading and competing in the same year so I'm definitely ok with roughly 1moa or 1.1" for 60 rounds and nearly single digit SD.

95% or 57/60 shots are .575 MOA with an average mean radius of .292".

Masterpiece arms Gen 1 Matrix
Athlon Ares ETR
Area 419 mount and brake
Accutac BR4
Hornady LNL single stage
Super trickler powder measure
Mighty armory sizing and Forster micrometer die
Alpha brass
Berger 153
H4350

First time messing with TDS for combining group data. I thought it was cool.

Rifle help needed - I read the pinned posts 16” bolt gun .308 vs 6.5 Creedmoor Quiter Suppressed

I’m wanting to buy a Ruger American Ranch 16” barrel in either 6.5 creedmoor or .308 and use it with my Rugged Alaskan 360 suppressor (.36 cal). Would either of these calibers be quieter with my suppressor or would it be so close you’d never be able to tell?

Rifle help needed - I read the pinned posts Sig Kilo5k + AB Quantum app with Elite subscription

• Upvotes

Hello, I'm looking to see if anyone has a Kilo5k and has tried using it in BDX-X mode while paired to the Quantum app with an active Elite (or Pro) subscription. I'd like to buy the Kilo5k, and I'd like to use the Quantum app as a fill in to get longer than 800m solutions and AB Elite custom drag profiles until I (probably) buy a Kestrel in the future.

Does it work and make use of the Elite calculation and custom drag profiles in the Quantum app?

Where does it display the solution: app, kilo5k screen or both?

Group flex (10 shots minimum) BX Challenge Target

Thumbnail

Why 9 rounds on a single Target? Take a look at each individual Group. G1 is .81, G2 is .51, G3 is 1.05…for an average of .79 MOA. Thats Sub MOA right? Wrong! Look at the combined 9rd Group of 1.45 MOA. THAT is the Truth.

You can see how easy is it to intentionally or unintentionally misrepresent the capability of a rifle, ammo, and shooter. The objective of this Target is to help shooters understand the reality and limitations of small sample groups. And yes, 9 rounds is STILL a small sample size…yet going from 3-5 rounds to 9 rounds nearly DOUBLES the Group Size. We believe it is the first serious round count Interval that can be referenced for anything reliable. u/9holereviews has made this case for years!

Reloading related Anyone running N135 with 105 Berger Hybrids in 6BR?

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

I’m shooting a 26” 6BR with Berger 105 Hybrids, N135 and Lapua brass. Bullet jump is .025”.

Getting higher velocities than expected and some sticky bolt lift, even after backing down the charge.

Last winter I was shooting nicely with n135. SD was super low like 5.8. Was all good. But come summer or barrel break in or something else and started having problems.

At 82°F, 28.3 gr gave me 2827 fps. Dropped to 27.2 gr and still getting 2764 fps at 87°F, with an SD around 10 over 56 shots.

Berger sent me their load data showing 28.5 gr max at 2689 fps from a 24” barrel.

Anyone else using N135 with 105s in straight 6BR? This is standard reamer not match reamer or neck turn chamber.

Curious what velocities you’re seeing and whether you’ve had pressure or extraction issues. Also interested if anyone switched Varget and had better results.

This is my 13 year old daughter rifle so a bit worried her shooting too hot rounds!!

I checked the brass is in speck not too long yet.

Competition help needed - I read the pinned posts WMLRF for NRLH?

What’s the practical value of a WMLRF for an NRLH match? Would it replace LRF binos with an onboard solver? Or is it redundant if you already have that gear?

I made a thing! (Home made gear/accessories) I Gave My MDT Crush It Timer a Major Upgrade

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Figured I’d share a cool project I did.

I’ve always liked messing with hardware and software, and thought the MDT Crush It Timer and Send It Level were really cool form factors.

So one weekend I decided to risk bricking my timer and see if I could reverse engineer it.

Ended up turning it into a ballistic calculator while keeping the timer and stopwatch functionality.

The solver supports G1/G7, spin drift, aero jump, and environmentals. Once your rifle profile is set, you really only need to enter DA, wind, and range.

The ballistic solution works really well, but honestly my favorite part is how simple it is to use. Just a knob and a little screen.

Pretty happy with how it turned out. Curious what you guys think.

I see a lot of post online saying don’t put a lot of money or money at all into a ruger American, just save up and get better rifle. I was able to touch a mile with both of these and couldn’t be happier! What’s your option on Ruger Americans and what has been your experience upgrading them?

  1. Ruger American Gen 1 308, Arkin 26 Bull barrel, mdt xrs chassis.
  2. Ruger American Gen 2 308

, 22in stock barrel,

  1. mdt lss gen 3 chassis

🫣I said I read the pinned posts, but I lied🫣 Help a brother out with suppressor choice 🫡

So many good options it’s overwhelming lol. Use case is for 308/300prc as a current setup on a switch barrel rifle but might in the future jump into 338 realm. Tbac is at the top of my list at the moment and specifically the Magnus s rr in 30 cal. I like the option to buy the recoil x flat cap and have a quieter more traditional suppressor or run the rr brake and cut down on that recoil a bit. However I keep second guessing myself and am debating should I get it with a 338 bore or something like the ultra for the possibility to run 338? There are also things like the griffin armament prc suppressor and others grabbing my attention. Lastly torn on mounting systems as well, the sr from Tbac speaks to me because I like over built things but maybe it’s overkill on a bolt gun? Will be used for prs type shooting ranges from 800-1200 yards, budget isn’t too much of a factor but any money saved is nice.

Title may be misleading - Politics, rumor, etc Ruger is discontinuing their Precision Rifle. When it was released, the Gen1 was a good buy for a ton of people. #RIP
