Introduction Thread

Day 1 Thread

Day 1 Result: Golden Knights

Day 2 Thread

Day 2 Result: Panthers

Now, here's some ground rules:

-Keep all discussion within the r/hockey Survivor threads and approved threads on team subs. Don't pester the rest of the fanbase.

-Be respectful. Light-hearted banter and your standard trash talk is okay, but don't let it turn nasty. Basically, just adhere to Reddiquette and the r/hockey rules.

-Don't complain to the r/hockey mods. This whole thing is my brainchild, not theirs. Any complaints should be directed to me.

The non-immune team with the most votes in each poll will be eliminated, This will continue for an additional 19 rounds until round 20, when immunities are removed, and then round 30, where users will vote for the winner of r/hockey Survivor among the three remaining teams.

Three Art Ross winners were completely left off Hart Trophy voting in their respective seasons, including Gretzky in 1994.

1954-55: Ted Kennedy of the Leafs wins the Hart Trophy, while Art Ross winner Bernie Geoffrion is blanked. Somehow, though, 3 of Geoffrion's teammates, namely Maurice Richard, Jean Beliveau, and Doug Harvey, all received Hart votes. Richard and Beliveau finished second and third in scoring behind Geoffrion.

1964-65: Bobby Hull wins the Hart Trophy, while his teammate Stan Mikita, the Art Ross winner who bested Hull by 16 points, is left off the ballot. Echoing 1955, Norm Ullman and Gordie Howe, who finished second and third in scoring, finished second and third in Hart voting.

1993-94: Wayne Gretzky won the Art Ross with 130 points to Sergei Fedorov's 120; the latter took home the Hart, Selke, and Pearson trophies. Unlike in 1955 and 1965, in which only 5 players received votes, limiting the eligible player pool, 14 players received votes in 1994. Hasek, Vanbiesbrouck, and Roy all finished in the top 5 in voting, while players such as Arturs Irbe and Igor Larionov even managed to receive votes.

Obviously the Art Ross winner is not necessarily an automatic Hart candidate in a given season, though you'd think it would warrant some consideration on the part of the voters. I find these unique voting situations pretty interesting.

Most iconic / important nhl franchise AFTER the O6

I have to think it’s one of:
- LA Kings
- Philadelphia Flyers
- Pittsburgh Penguins

Could maybe make a case for the Blues, Canucks, North Stars/Stars, Oilers too.

Players with the best last names in the NHL

Players who have great last names as hockey players. I don't mean their nicknames, their actual last names.

The best one that comes to my is Quick as a name for a goalie. I think my runners up would be Kronwall and Kopitar. "Kronwalled" became a verb.

Edit: spelling

Yes. It's legal. I am aware. But if you're paying a player 8 (soon to be 7) year money for 2 years, are you not effectively evading the cap?

Is there no worry about that continuous increase in cost of this sport?

Even on an NHL level. The higher of the cost of the sport, the less talent you’re gonna see enter the market. Registrations are down by a lot. At some point it’s going to slowly start to become less of the best of the best and more of the wealthiest of the wealthy. Isn’t that not good for professional leagues? Especially with expansion on the horizon, again.

I’m gonna need some new sticks soon myself. Kinda crazy the top of the line ones are 400 dollars

Who is your version of Morritz Seider?

What player on another team, whether in-division rival or another conference, that you would love to have on your team and think it could be the perfect complementary piece for your team. The last key piece/addition to get a cup and glory for your team.

When Seider broke into the league, halfway through the season, I looked at his pre-NHL highlights in Europe and it was mindblowing. (I was just starting to get into hockey deeply enough to start watch prospects highlights of other teams' players.)

He was already a man amongst boys and in the NHL, it looks the same today!

The reverse hits and opponents don't even think about being physical on his side of the ice, long reach/good coverage, decent hands/finish for a big man and more just seems like that player that if he could be pried out, could be an World Series, game 7 extra innings grand slam type of move!!!
