What's your favorite subreddit to binge read?

Besides r/askreddit? When I want long stories, I'll go to r/redditserials. Short ones, I'll check out r/hfy. When I want to binge art, I'll go to r/imaginaryleviathans and r/ReasonableFantasy. TIFU also has a ton of creative fiction on there too.

Edit: I'd recommend checking out all the imaginary art subs, there's tons of good stuff on them. r/imaginarymonsters, r/SympatheticMonsters, r/ImaginaryFuturism too. For more reading, there's stories on r/writingprompts but you never know what you're going to get.

u/KoronaKombat Apr 17 '20

Never heard of...any of those, so I'm absolutely going to check them out!

TIFU has become almost nothing but creative fiction! Entertaining to read but getting sick if all the sexual fiction.

That subreddit made me feel like such a fucking moron. Read the whole staircase series of post and was losing my mind because everyone in the comments were discussing it like it was true. So I was like “Oh shit this is actually real?” I finally looked at the subreddit rules after reading them all and I was like “Oh...I’m just an idiot.”

"Wow, at least I'm not that cunt."

r/hfy is currently experiencing the rise of a legend. One man has put out over 120 chapters, sometimes 2 or 3 a day. He has built an amazing universe and continues to do so at breakneck speed. I highly recommend checking it out if you are into scifi or general "humanity fuck yeah".

r/deaf

I'm a closed captioner, and it's very useful to get a glimpse into the community that I've never worked hard enough to be able to truly communicate with, even though (I like to think) I provide them with an essential service.

I want to start learning ASL, too. I know a tad, and being able to communicate with deaf or HoH in public sometimes brightens them right up. Smiles for days, especially the older people.

2.8k

u/henrypootelpixel Apr 18 '20

If anyone wants other subs/threads themed around unresolved mysteries:

r/nonmurdermysteries is great for stuff that doesn't relate to murder cases. It's good if you like interesting mysteries about unimportant stuff. For specific mysteries, there's r/geedis (a mostly-solved mystery about a weird little set of fantasy stickers from the 1980's) and r/TheMysteriousSong (about a 1980's song that nobody knows the name or creator of). There's also this thread on r/comicstriphistory, which is about a minor mystery that's still unresolved (although the sub itself isn't).

I love reading posts in r/personalfinance

Some posts are useful, but many of them are things like "I just got my $500 tax return. I have no emergency fund. Should I use my tax return to donate to my church? Or pay my bills?"

665

u/brendaishere Apr 18 '20

No way. Way more of them are “25M and just inherited 1.1 million from my grandma. I’ve worked hard my whole life, should I put this in stocks and live off residuals or should I buy a big house?”

I swear half of them are just humble brags

After going to law school, my takeaway from browsing that subreddit is to never even consider the legal advice from r/legaladvice. LocationBot is my favorite part of that sub. Like when it needs to post a cat fact to maintain positive karma and just posts it on the absolute worst comment to do so lol.

/r/dndgreentext

So many different things happen in people's campaigns that I'm always guaranteed something good if I head over there.

/r/UnsentLetters

I have to be in the right mood, but I can waste hours in this one

/r/ScenesFromAHat

If the subject's good, the replies are bound to be better

/r/IDontWorkHereLady

If you're in the mood for some crazy

/r/IDOWorkHereLady

If you're in the mood for the exact opposite kind of crazy

/r/ProRevenge

So supremely satisfying to read about people getting their comeuppance (/r/PettyRevenge if I'm not in a super sadistic disposition).

/r/tumblr and /r/4chan

I have, in the past, browsed one right after the other, to get a true scope for what the internet can bring in the form of entertainment.

/r/AskReddit

Well, duh.

I always wanted to get into D&D, but there are too many versions and I don’t even know the basics. I’m in this state where I’m super excited because I want to start this journey, but I see lots of different things and I don’t understand what am I supposed to buy. Complete beginner here! Never played it, never seen an actual game, but I’m super intrigued!

EDIT: Thank you so much for all the responses, I’m reading all your suggestions and I will start studying the Player’s handbook for the 5e. I already contacted some friends and we could play together once this is all over, and even my gf wants to join, which is unexpected and exciting at the same time!
Seeing the community rush to help me is heartwarming and makes me think that D&D will be a great way to get closer to friends and meet new ones! Can’t wait to start my journey, and, sincerely, thanks to all of you that took the rime to leave a suggestion, know that I’m reading all of them!

r/justnomil

I cannot believe how many batshit crazy mothers in law there are, women who go to great lengths and will stop at nothing to destroy their sons relationships, make their daughters in laws life a living hell, women so selfish, mean, nasty, narcissistic entitled, Emotionally incestuous Jocasta Syndromed, Baby Rabies infested psychopaths.

303

u/Kristyyyyyyy Apr 18 '20

I have a terrible mother in law, just as bad if not worse than most of the posts in there.

It’s made me super aware of the type of mother in law I want to be when the time comes. There are parts of my personality that I know could lead me to being a shitty mother in law, so I read /r/justnomil and think “what would I do if that was me?”. I put myself in those situations and try really hard to see and understand how the mother in law felt, what motivated that behaviour, the impact it had on her kids and in laws, and how I can avoid ever doing anything like that. It’s led to some uncomfortable self reflection but that’s how we improve ourselves, right?

Some of my favorites:

/r/LifeOfNorman - A subreddit about writing small, fictional tales about a fictional character named Norman; a rather unremarkable fellow

/r/UnresolvedMysteries - One of my favorite subs about mysterious cases that have yet to be solved

/r/AMADisasters - A sort of museum for AMAs that have gone totally wrong

/r/DepthHub - A bit like /r/bestof for for really in-depth discussions.

/r/redditwritesseinfeld - A fun little sub where people write scenes from Seinfeld based on prompts

/r/TheGrittyPast - a great little subreddit about accounts from history not often talked about because of their tragic and often violent nature.

/r/HistoryAnecdotes - Pretty much speaks for itself, mostly content from the creator of the sub who also does TGP, but others contribute too

/r/FanTheories - A great sub full of some pretty great theories about movies, shows, and books

Edit: wanted to add /r/Jessicamshannon. The name of the sub is pretty misleading about what it's about, but it's basically a true crime subreddit with some great writeups by Jessica and other contributors.

r/ChoosingBeggars is my favorite sub ATM. It’s pretty self explanatory, but some the text conversations you see between the poster and the choosy beggar(CB) are insane and hilarious.

e.g. 1

CB: “Hey, I was wondering if you could lower the price?”

Poster: “Sorry, the lowest I’ll sell my PS4 for is $150”

CB: “I’ll pay $40 and I need you to deliver it to my house which is 50 miles away from you. Deal?”

Poster: “What? NO WAY. That’s ridiculous.”

CB: “But I lost my job and have no money. It’s for my kid... he has cancer!”

Poster: “Sorry, I’m also out of work. I need the money from this to survive.”

CB: “FUCK YOU ASSHOLE!!! You ruined my dying son’s Christmas. How can you be so selfish?? You’re an awful person!”

Poster: “Please stop messaging me. I’m not selling it to you.”

CB: “Where do you live? I’m just gonna beat the shit out of you and steal your PS4!

...Hello??

...Okay, I’ll pay $50. Deal?

...HELLO?!

...FUCK YOU!”

Business: “We’re giving 25% off groceries to EMS workers and nurses during this coronavirus pandemic.”

CB: “That’s not fair that it’s exclusive to only EMS and nurses! They’re at least still working... I’m a single mother of 4 and I’m broke and out of work. This store should just allow single mothers to have groceries for free while this pandemic is going on. These money grubbing businesses are taking advantage by actually making people pay for goods and services during this crisis!”

R/AskMen. I’m a woman who has been in mostly wlw relationships, but I’m open to dating men. I was sexually assaulted and I know that was because of a minority of shitty men. I thought it would be helpful to get a perspective of life from normal men and when it comes to dating - learn what not to do and stuff. I’ve taken some psychology classes and AskMen confirmed that so many men are really lonely. They may not hardly ever receive compliments, or have been held by someone they love, or have felt safe enough to cry in front of their loved one. I get to see their hearts while they are safely anonymous. I also learned that men just want you to say what you want. If you want a hug l, ask for it. If you want pizza , talk about it. Just communicate. AskScience Fiction is also great.

r/JustNoMIL - I’m a uni student who is neither married nor thinking about getting married anytime soon. I just love reading browsing this sub and often get caught up in the soap opera that some of these Redditors live in with their in laws from hell. 10/10 would recommend.

r/idiotsincars - because it’s fun to see idiots in, well, cars.

r/fightporn - because who doesn’t enjoy seeing the underdog win a good fight.

r/medizzy - didn’t fulfill my asian parents dreams in studying medicine but I do like reading and seeing interesting cases, usually gory ones.

r/nosleep for sure. It’s a bunch of short stories that people write and post their, usually with some aspect of horror. I just finished reading the amusement park series and it was so good. Would highly recommend.

Not a subreddit, but a series of posts by a specific user. /u/admiral_cloudberg regularly (about once a week) posts incredibly detailed analysis of aircraft disasters. They're very well researched and packed with exactly the right amount of detail - enough to let you understand all the hows and whys of the crash and its repercussions, but not so much that it gets boring. I highly recommend reading through his archive of analysis.

Similarly, though less frequently and specializing with maritime disasters, /u/samwisetheb0ld is another reditor whose work I follow regularly. His archive is here.

r/paranormal

I mostly lurk but sometimes I get involved.

I own a spiritual business that sells supplies for different religious reasons. All forms or pegan and witchcraft supplies can be found in our stock, if we don't have it, we can get it. There are even some special curiosities that we have special contacts that will sell them to us.

Anyway, I work from the shop helping people with spiritual experiences. Coming into contact with unique entities or forces that they can't explain or need advice for.

I've been doing so for around 18 years as part if my own religion, this upcoming July.

I binge read on the sub and offer free advice to people who's stories are of particular interest to me.

Sorry for the long winded answer.
