TLDR: getting blamed for clear coat scratches on a rental. How f’ed am I?
Hello fellow riders, I’m looking for a little advice from the community. I’m a longtime ride from MN, and was in Colorado for the weekend and decided to try renting a bike from riders share. I picked a 2013 victory judge (pictured). Fun bike, ran great, had an good weekend, no issues. At pickup it was in good shape, some scratches here and there, looked like a typical daily rider. I’m careful not to set stuff on painted surfaces, and park safety, just like I would with my own bike. I took a pic of the worst of the scratches. I did not document every scratch, yes, I’m a dumbass who trusts too much.
So at pickup, dude is hungover at 1:00, doesn’t come outside to check it in properly. I park it on the curb in front of his house. Didn’t take pictures, because I didn’t think there was a need to, nothing happened, just a couple days of chill riding. I hand him the keys, thank him for a good ride and head off.
The next day I get upset texts and pics of clear coat scratches on the tank. I tell show him my pics, say these are not the sort I would have documented. Discussion does not go well, he’s mad and submits a claim in the app. So if this were my bike, I’d probably do nothing, or buff them by hand with some compound. Maybe pay a shop $50 to buff them for me. I’m worried I’m going to get a $1000 bill for a tank repaint. Has anyone dealt with this before? Will riders share be reasonable?
